So,

Crowning alfalfa and everything had been running like a well-oiled clock for the past 5 hours. Then this..........oh well. :>)

looks like its on the end that has the nut. way better than the other end. gonna just do one, or replace all the blades on the rear gangs???

Oh heck,

I'm really upset. When I buy and old worn out piece of equipment, I expect it to go at least another 1,000 acres or so. :>)

I'll slide on one new blade on and keep on truckin'.

At least it wasn't the tractor, that is what I was afraid of. I remember changing blades on the Kewannee disc we had. Not the most fun but doable.

hat disc looks new to me!,...All the paint is still on it!

Should be no problem,...just keep the nuts tight.;)

Allan, what is "crowning" the alfalfa?
Your post yesterday mentioned "separating the cheat grass". Can you (or someone else) explain this for me?

Sorry for the juvenile question! I've never heard that term before

Alfalfa has deep roots, the grass shallow.

If you disc the alfafa field early in the spring running about 2" deep, those blades will split the crowns and the alfalfa comes back thicker than ever while at the same time you're killing the unwanted grass.

Always makes me nervous, but it does work.

Allan

Okay, that makes sense now. The disc is not penetrating and working/breaking up the soil. The grass gets cut off, the alfalfa divided and prone to new-growth.
Have you had good success with this tactic? How long does a typical hay field last before you plow it and start over?

It would make me nervous to chop up a nice field too!

Ahh, look at the bright side. It's only one blade and it's only the second one in. Drop the hanger, slide the offender out, slide the new one in and you're off to the races :)

t's not that simple if the nut is on the other end of the gang!

Back when I was disking for dad with the old whee less drag disk, I ran the disk across the alfalfa field one spring, as were going to take the alfalfa out anyhow.

Well we changed our mind, one more year... That disk width of alfalfa was better than the rest of the field.

Still too scared to ever try it on propose tho. ;)

Think I just bought the same model of disk last fall, hope mine holds up for a while.

It's NEVER done up here in east SD. Our alfalfa fields typically last 7-8 years. With annual applications of some P&K. Yields vary according to rains but average is three cuttings and 4-5T per acre.
Allan is in one of the driest areas of the U.S. Takes special breed of cat and technique to survive there.
