Clutch plate orientation

When my son removed the old pressure plate clutch pack attention wasn't payed on the orientation of the old clutch plate. The new clutch plate does not say flywheel side nor pressure plate side. It does have a cone on one side which has the splines in it. Does this go toward the flywheel or the pressure plate side. The tractor is a Ford 4600 diesel 1975 model

"Cone" goes to the rear, towards the pressure plate fingers, specifically towards the throw out bearing. The non-cone side goes towards the pressure plate pilot bearing. Flip them around and I doubt that the pressure plate will be able to engage because the disc will set too far off of the flywheel, and even it it can, the "cone" would shred the pilot bearing.

Sorry...the "non-cone" goes towards the flywheel. I said that wrong above. Point the "cone" towards the rear.

Thanks Mark I did install it as you mentioned. But when I tightened it down with the alignment tool installed, it just looked like the two splines were right on top of each other in close quarters and it just didn't look right.

Do yourself a favor for us both. I haven't replaced a clutch on a 4600, but have on several tractors, trucks, and even cars and they face as I told you. However, maybe there is something different about the flywheel on the 4600 and the way that the transmission main shaft aligns with it and the pilot bushing or bearing. Try posting on the Ford forum here just to be safe. I'm pretty sure that I'm correct, but don't want to screw you up and damage equipment. Post over here to the Ford guys specifically. Run it by them.
