My brother is having trouble getting his 4×4 transfer case to
engage by the dial switch on the dash. he pulled the fuse out
puts it back in and you can hear the servo try to engage the
transfer case but it won't go in 4x4, He tried my dash switch
and it does nothing when he put my switch in there also.
anyone have any ideas? We don't know if it's a voltage
problem a bad wire etc. it's a 1999 f250 7.3, thanks for any
help.

Is the transfer case not engaging, or are the hubs not engaging? I don't see much trouble with the t-cases, the hubs usually are the culprit. Those use a rediculous vacuum setup.

The transfer case will not engage. Yes those vacuum hubs stink I put warn manual lock ones on mine.

There is a connector in the left kick panel that I have seen corrode that can shut down the t-case, but that one made no noise.

It may be the transfer case shift motor , pretty easy to remove just 3 bolts usually 10mm heads. Sometimes if you just take it off and bang it around and reinstall it , it will work , but you need to use it every couple days to keep the position sensor part of the motor from getting corrosion build up . Those motors are expensive from Ford but aftermarket has them for a lot less.

also check the fuse box and GEM module up under the dash on drivers side for signs of water leaking onto it , there were issues with windshield leaks in that era .

People tend to overlook the fact that any motor or activator should be "exercised" occasionally. We used to see a number of these when cold weather set in. The grease and parts in the activator motor will get stiff or set up from lack of use and the motor cannot overcome the resistance. Generally, the tech. would remove, clean and lubricate the motor and it would work fine. Just a thought.
