I was wondering if anybody ever replanted the previous year's harvested seed and what kind of result there was? I know grain corn for any kind of production needs to be hybrid. This is not RR or any proprietary or intellectual issues attached (Monsanto). Just plain garden store seed that was planted this past year with the seed from the parent plant harvested and saved.
 
This years crop was from seed saved from last years crop, it all tasted like field corn. Wish you better luck than I had.
 
I do it every year with good results. You can not have your sweet corn too close to field corn. If planted too close to fields corn it will cross-pollinate and results will be half field corn.

As long as its not a hybrid saving seed should work fine. Hybrids of anything will start to revert back to the original seeds when planted. I never paid much attention to sweet corn seed to know what there is for hybrids. Planting sweet corn too close to any other corn or even a different variety if similar maturity time will cause cross pollination and affect the crop, even with pop corn.
 
I have often wondered that, I did save some ears from last year and they are dried right down, but I would have to see what variety it was, might have been 90 day burpee silver queen, which is a hybrid. Be interesting to learn more about this for sure LOL !
 
I looked at some ears of RR sweet corn. The kernels are so small and dried up, don't look like they would germinate. In fact haven't had any come up volunteer.
 
I save all sorts of open-pollinated vegetable seeds and re-plant them each year. I have two varieties of sweet corn and two varieties of field corn. I think they recommend open-pollinated corn varieties be planted at least 1,500 feet apart to prevent cross-pollination. Sustainable Seed Company is a good source for open-pollinated seeds.
