More Dodge Diesel Brakes

From my earlier post:
Tonight when driving home my brakes failed on my 1990 Dodge Ram 250 diesel.
My pedal became extremely hard, braking dropped off to almost nothing, and the "brake" and "anti lock" warning lights came on. Fluid levels are fine. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I pulled the vacuum line from the booster. I did not have a vacuum gauge handy but put my thumb over the line with the engine running and could not feel anything, I put the tube against my cheek and could feel only the slightest of pulls. With the engine off, I gently blew on the line and heard a kazoo like sound, hence I agree, it is probably the booster pump. Also, the fluid level in the power steering was low, but not so low as to cause steering issues or even a noise.

Thanks.

think you found problem. I think that model is all vacumn boost, so p/steer doesn't assist like on some other models. I think I changed one like this once--mounts between engine & p/s pump? not easy.

I'd sure think they should be mighty Proud of such a well thought out braking system...
Wonder how many other units like that are on the road..??

No Kidding. Even when it is working well, if you lose power, you lose about 60-70% of your braking.

I had a 94 Dodge Diesel for work. It was an automatic and you had to ride the brakes downhill even if you had it in the lowest gear (I had to come off a 2400 foot hill regularly). The brakes would get so hot it would cook the fluid which resulted in no braking. I'd stop by the parking brake and wait nearly an hour for it to cool to continue.

Not much worse than HOT, fading brakes..!!

BTDT, but I HAVE dropped from the Top (Side-Road TOP) of Vail..(NO Jake), with 80,000# Gross wt, all the way to the bottom and never smoked a brake..

Try that sometime...the snow never melts up there at the top..

At that time, Calif did not require a Jake and we didn't get Power Steering for another 6 years..(Cab-Over K-Whopper, 1693TA 425 (they SMOKE plenty) 13over, 4:11

No vacuum at booster, follow vac line back to vacuum pump, check line real good for cracks etc, unplug line at pump and see if you have vacuum leaving the pump. The pump is right in front of the power steering pump, the P/S pump is driven off the back if the vac pump. If you need to remove it then remove both pumps as an assembly then separate them on the bench.
