I am sure this has been covered before but I dont remember seeing it. How do I charge a 24 volt system? I help this lady out and today her batterys were dead, I unhooked the left hand one and used a charger on it and another charger for the other one. Is this the way to do it? Thanks for any help. its a 3020 JD

That will work just fine.
You don't really need to unhook one battery, as long as you stay on each battery.
In your case of being "not sure" you did the fine.

As stated there's no need to unhook batteries just attach charger or jump vehicle + to + & - to - on one or both sides using 2 jump vehicles or two 12 volt chargers.

"How do I charge a 24 volt system?"

I agree with the other fine gents. Assuming you have a 12 volt battery charger, you can charge each battery one at a time, + to + and - to - from charger to battery, just have to do it twice is all. Piece of cake

As previously stated one battery at a time. If the right side battery was discharged. Odds are the starter is full of carbon dust and needs cleaning.
In cold weather like now. A block heater is required on a 3020 style engine. Cranking and cranking and cranking until the batteries are dead is not going to start the tractor. Don't start thinking about ether either.

John Deere apparently did more than think about ether, as my 4020 has a receptacle right on the dash. On the occasion when I don't have the time to wait for the block heater(my addition), I have used it. Just like the newer electrical ether injectors, the shortest, quickest jab you can give it does the job.

That is the best way how you done it! Because not many chargers have a setting for 24 volt systems.

The problem is Bubba and a can of ether. Rare is too little used vs the occasions too much is used.
I usually plan ahead and use a timer on the block heater. Then again it's a large tank unit so warm up time is brief anyways.

Easiest to just charge them separately. Most of the simpler 12 volt chargers use a center tapped transformer and 2 diodes. They can be converted to charge 24 volts by disconnecting the center-tap, use one diode and bypassing the other diode..
