Hello to all. I am new to the forum so i hope that this is posted in the correct location. I am restoring a 1954 john deere model 60 and am having some trouble with the clutch. I cannot get the lever to engage with a snap like the manual says it should. It will lightly snap loose when you disengage the clutch but doesnt have very much resistancs. The three castle nuts are screwed in almost all the way which i know is not right. Everything i side the clutch belt pulley is new except the clutch toggles and dogs. Would they cause the clutch not to lock in like it is supposed to and if so what should i look for to tell if they are worn. Looking forward to any advice. Thanks to all.

You should probably ask the question over on the John Deere page, as there are probably more JD folks over there than here. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Did you have the whole clutch off,or maybe I should ask if you had the clutch driver off.If not there's another clutch plate behind the driver which could be shot. Those drivers are sometimes hard to get off so consequently that inside disc doesn't get replaced.Ron

You may have answered your own question. If all discs are new then castle nuts should not be that far in. It's basically an "over center" type clutch so if dogs/toggles are worn then it just won't work correctly. Good thing is all the parts are available....bad part is $$$$$. Let us know what you find as it helps everyone. Maybe even post pics of worn vs new parts. You won't be/ aren't the only one to post this question. It all goes into the archives and anyone can access it later on.

I had time today to take the clutch assembly all back apart. Yes the clutch disc behind the clutch driver is new. I removed the dogs and toggles to inspect them. Two of the dogs look fairly new and one looks very worn and could be the original. The three toggles are all different lengths with about 1/16" difference from the shortest to the longest. The pins that hold the dogs in place have very little wear and play in them. I ordered new dogs and toggles today and as soon as they come in and i get them installed i will post back with the end result. Thanks for all the advice. Next time i will go to the john deere section of the forum like some of you suggested. Beginners mistake. Thanks again.

Thanks for the link on the clutch pin. Mine has very very little
play but will definitly be something i may look into while i have
it all disassembled. My parts book shows that it can be drove
out so i dont think i would have to pull the gear. Thanks again.
I am sure a little play here and there adds up.
