jd 400 mower gearcase question

rebuilding a gearcase for a jd 400 mower, 60 in deck. shaft drive curtiss gearbox. have a new shim kit to set the gear clearance, anybody know how tight to set em? replacing all the bearings races and seals in the gearbox also.

Glennster, my book says output shaft endplay should be within 0.001-0.003 in.. The four cap screws on the cap should be tightened to 22 lb-ft. Hope this helps. Phil
