Looking at 1968 3020 with ps trans. Four JD mechanics told me they would not touch it at all. would yall be scared of it. Do not know who owned the tractor. It is a 46 year old tractor and do not know how tractor was treated. Wish it was syncro.

Find a mechanic to run the pressure checks on it to assess its condition. PS typically lasts longer than a synchro but is more expensive to fix. You couldn"t give me a synchro.

I will second what JMS posted. The PS is a wonderful transmission IF it is properly maintained. They can be costly to fix if they have much wrong with them. You really have to watch this on a JD 3020 as the total value of the tractor can be surpassed by the cost to repair the transmission.

You did not state if the tractor was gas or diesel. If it is gas RUN!!!! A JD 3020 gas is a pure headache. They just about NEVER run right on the new gas. Electronic ignitions help some but do not solve all the troubles.

I have a 2510, which is obviously a bit different. Also a synchro. Have driven 3020 as well, many people use them to this day as either a second loader tractor to load bales on trucks or for mounted/pull Kosch mowers, rakes, etc. Very nice little tractors. Lots of powershifts still around. Don't know many places around here that don't have one of these age tractors.

If gas they can be repowered, don't know how similar the 3020 is in that respect. Mine was a hay stacker the first 30 years of its life. I now have a 4.5L turbo diesel in my 2510 that was gas. Engine was found by my uncle, it was in a construction trailer running an air compressor. He asked $400 for the engine but I gave him more. It just needed minor work, biggest was changing the water pump so the fan fit behind the radiator. No issues in over 10 years, obviously just have to not work it harder than it was designed for. I use it as my rake, mower (switch between the two since I hay by myself), to haul bales for the smaller pens sometimes in the winter if I don't use the Haybuster, and my general small utility tractor.
