We have to take my daughter back to OU in Norman. Wife wants to see the Arabia museum in Missouri. I want to see the Flint Hills and the National Grassland Preserve around Emporia. We'll both get our wish.

The trip south out of Emporia on the 2 lane is more interesting than the tollway. A lot of small towns and Oklahoma hills.

Stay off the turnpike! take secondary roads.Then check the beautiful local scenery.Be sure to see Cottonwood Falls historic courthouse and surrounding countryside.

If you have the time, go by and check out Big Brutus and the southeastern Kansas coal mining museum in West Mineral. Second largest electric shovel this side of the Mississippi River, at least that's how they advertised it afew years back.

Take the highway from manhattan to Cottonwood Falls if you want to see the Flint Hills.I've lived here all my life & I still can't tell you what hiway it is. Either 77 or 177. The Tallgrass Prairie preserve is just north of Cottonwood Falls .Funny thing about the preserve is ,the Bass brothers rent the grass & they graze it as hard they can, though not as bad as the first couple of years they had it.A couple of good resturants locally also. AD ASTRA in Strong City & Emma Chase in Cottonwood. Emma has the best Chicken Fried steak on earth.Then there are a couple of museums in Cottonwood if you like that stuff.

Well if I could make a recomondation. From the Arabia I would take the turnpike to Lawrence where the Kansas university campus is located. They have a good natural history museum and visit Allen fieldhouse and museum where Basketball was born. From Lawerence get back on turnpike and go west to topeka and on to emporia. Leave the turnpike and go west to Stong city and vist the Tall grass prairie preserve north of town. Then south to cottonwood falls to see the courthouse. Continue south through the flinthills to ElDorado and visit the Oil museum on the East side of town. Now you have a choice, you can go south of town 18 miles and stop for a visit or get back on turnpike and head south to Norman. Sorry I don't know all the highway #s but a map will guide you easily. As far as cost on turnpike it isn't much. Charge by axle so 2axle car is less than $20 from one end to the other IIRC. Have a safe trip!

I read "Prairyearth" about the Cottonwood--Strongs area. Entire book was about Chase County. Author spent several weeks in the area talking to locals. One guy cut the last limestone slab from the quarry. Another time the author sat in his van all day long and nothing much happened yet he still filled a chapter with observations. Authors last name was Least Moon. Good book and interesting.

Vernon;

I would like to stop and say hello if we have time. email is [email protected] if you send your number.
