Passports

I have a passport card and now need the full passport deal. Anyone know if i need to reapply for new passport or is there an application to upgrade? Thought about this while tedding hay. Any help appreciated.

First, what is a passport card? Second, the post office should have forms to apply for passports(US).

There are two passports now, one that is a card for where it does not need punched, and a full passport for travel to other countries.

I think you can apply for only one.

Never heard of two kinds. Mine is about 5 years old and I renew it at our local township office.

The fee for the book is $110. The card is only $30. You'll probably have to pay the $25 execution fee again and you'll probably have to do at least some of the paperwork again too. But it should be easier and faster.

You use the form to renew your passport and you can do it by mail if you can live without your card for a while.
On the application you check that you want a book or even both.

When My wife and I renewed our passports we were asked if we wanted the book, card, or both. We have both.

Card is for going to and from Canada (and maybe Mexico? not sure)- need book for anywhere else. Book works for Canada as well, so we saw no need for the card and just got the book.

Now you know: always get the book. If you want the card for trips into Canada and Mexico, get it IN ADDITION to the book.

Anyone traveling to Canada frequently should get a Nexus card.

In Michigan we have an enhanced drivers license which allows us to go to Canada. When driving up to the Canadian customs agent you just wave it at a post and all your info comes up on their computer screen. Quick and easy..

One thing for everyone to know: You cannot fly on the card.
Yes you can use the card to travel on a cruise but what happens if you have an emergency and need to fly home from some port of call. If you just have the card you are stuck emergency or not. You may be able to get the consulate involved and get you home but how long will that take? Kind of like when seconds count the police are only minutes away.
If you travel any distance from a US boarder you need the book. Period.

You don't need anything to leave the US of A but you need the passport to come back. The card has very limited usefulness.

Go to a post office that handles passport aplications and they will be able to answere questions, and also help you on the application. The card only allows you to go to neighboring countrys more or less, and does not allow you to fly. You have to have the book to fly or to go to all countrys. The airline will not let you on a plane that is flying out of the country unless you have the passport book in hand. They know that you will not be allowed into the country you are going without it. I got my passport through the mail and it took about 2 months. If at all possible, get it way ahead of time if you know when you are leaving. They are good for 10 years.

A card is cheaper to get, but only allows you to go to mexico, canada, bahama's, exc. and does not allow you to fly. People more or less only use them to go back and forth over the boarder or to go on cruises.

technically you are right about not needing it to leave. However, any airline that I have flown on ask to see it uppon boarding a plane flying out of USA. They know you will be asked to show it at customs when you get to the other country. If you don't have it, you may not be permitted through customs where you are going. May also not be allowed to come back. Airlines make sure you have it when leaving even though technically its not required to have one to leave.
