Will this work ?

I have a generator that is 6500 watt-surge to 8500 and a Lincoln 225 amp ac welder. Will my generator run it enough to make probably 2 inch welds at around 120 amps?--My neighbors tore up my corral trying to load a steer I have kept since Feb.--Told my wife the joints were never welded so that means they won"t fix it. I KNOW BETTER!!! O-well, Will this work? Oh, the receptacle on the gen. says 120-240v.,30 amp. Thanks for any help.

Is the receptacle compatible with the plug on your welder?!?!?!

I imagine you have enough power there to do what you want to do, but the welder needs 220V for sure.

My idea is to make a short cord with a twist-lock plug for the gen. and a regular welder recep. on the other end. Probably 8 ga. wire.

SURE, it'll work, at least as well as the original welds did.

Just depends upon how well you want to fix/repair it.

I wanted to do the same thing with a similar welder and generator. Was told not to do it by a very good electrical repair shop that said the gennys just weren't made for that type of power. Welder/generators are built differently and much heavier duty.

I'd play it safe and rent/borrow a dedicated rig.

Well, what Amperage is the 220Volt outlet on your generator? If the breaker for that outlet is less than 40 amps, do not even try it. If the outlet is 40 amps or more, it should work for very small jobs like you are speaking of. I have used my 10k generator to weld with my portable mig, but that only required 110volts and 20 amps to run. I have not yet tried to run my Lincoln like yours.

We got a 30 amp plug in by our walk in door at the shop. Occasionally the welder will get plugged into that outlet for a outdoor quick repair.
If you just weld short beads for a 6-8 second burst it will hold. Get into some longer runs and it will pop the breaker.
