SAE 5W-30 hydraulic Oil

My 1965 John Deere 1010 service Manuel calls for SAE 5W-30 oil in the Hydraulic System. I have noticed when the tractor gets at or above normal operating temp the lift seems weaker. Could using standard hydraulic fluid cause this?

The 5w-30 oil falls between the ISO 46 and ISO 68 hydraulic oil. ISO 46 is sometimes refered to "medium" weight, the ISO 68 is considered "heavy".

If it has ISO 32 (light) in it, yes it could be too light.

A 40 year old tractor has bound to have some wear and tear on the pump and other hydr components, certainly if they have never been replaced so a little blow by is to be expected.
More so when hot.

Deere did not just recommend 5W-30 for 1010s. Many choices were given.

Above 90 F it called for SAE 30 or 10W-30

32F to 90F it called for SAE 20 or SAE 10W-30

-20F to 32F it called for SAE 10W or SAE 5W-20

Below -20F it called for ATF type A

The reality is - any oil will work if it can run through the filter (or filters) and not foam.

The viscosity recomnendations from Deere that jdemaris showed seem to indicate that some fading was expected, why else heavier oil at higher air temperatures? As bison indicated any fading will be magnified by a worn pump. Does it have a hydraulic oil cooler? If so, check to see if it's clean. It's all about keeping a constant oil temperature. The newer generations of tractors seem to do a much better job of this. For comparison, long ago my first loader tractor was a 1956 Oliver Super 88, it did not have a hydraulic oil cooler. Working steady on a manure pile, over the course of a hot afternoon, it would slow down a LOT! LOL. The good old days!

My Hydraulic Handbook, published by VICKERS, the
largest manufacturer of vane hydraulic pumps in
the world, recommended "10-30 Motor Oil"
I use that for everything, unless the equipment
manufacturer specifically recommends a different
product. I"ve used it with great success in my
woodsplitter,(Vickers V20 pump,Wisconsin 2 cyl.
engine) where it may start below zero, but get
hot when running !
