More about bright l lights

Is anyone else blinded by the high intensity lights on businesses aimed at the road? There are a lot that would put bright headlights to shame. I called the police and the sheriff about a couple nearby and they just pooh-poohed me. So I guess you can burn a retina out from off the right of way, just don't do it from an automobile. TDF

I guess this would fall into the making friends and influencing enemies category, but here is a way to get someone's attention:

Find a lawyer type friend to send the business, and the local law enforcement you talked to, a letter on his letter head indicating the hazard being presented by the offending lights. You might also copy local TV stations on this too. They are always looking for something sensational to report on. Don't make or imply any threats of any kind, simply make it out like it's an informational letter with a request to fix a problem.

If it's in a city they may have codes regarding these lights.

May not help, but it sure won't hurt either.

I'd rather use a shotgun. As for cameras, I'm afraid to pick my nose outside my home these days. :) TDF

Would think the first place to start is who's road it is, state highway, county road, city street, etc.

Then write a well composed letter to whatever government agency that is responsible for the road, stating the exact location, the nature of the hazard, the action you would like to see taken.

Never know, it just might get some action.

I did that with a concern of a needed stop sign on a freeway service road. Never thought about it again, but one day... There was the stop sign!

Our home owners regulations state the your floodlights/spotlights can not shine on an adjoining property. I would think that the same rule should apply to a business. In most cases, it's just a matter of positioning the lights during the dark to make sure they are properly adjusted.

My guess would be that the lights were adjusted during daylight hours instead of in the dark. I would call the business place; they may be willing to get them adjusted in the dark.

I'd just write the business, explain their lights are messing up your ability to drive and you almost had an accident because of their lights blinding you, send it to them registered mail so they have to sign for it, indicate on the bottom of the letter you have copied your lawyer (if you don't have one use a name out of the book, just make sure it's not the firm they use). You have now told them about a problem, their legal staff may want the hazard mitigated lest an accident really happen and they get sued, with your registered letter they can't play dumb (gee well we didn't know).

One gas station here has a flashing strobe, on the corner of the building, right at a traffic signal/intersection.. Very distracting.. I think it is there to draw attention to the security camera.. It really bugs me when I drive by..

Oh, and the bright big-screen programable signs 40 feet square are a nusiance too...Takes peoples eyes off the road, and interferes with their texting, phone calls, eating and drinking, and almost forgot, driving..

Seems the like to use a lot of flashing blue.. out of the corner of your eye, sometimes sort of makes you jump.. OK, Rant Over..

Our state has paid for all sorts of HUGE billboards that state "DONT TXT N DRV".

If you're NOT already distracted by "celling" or texting, the billboard will dra your attention from the road.

GREAT idea, eh?

If you ask me, the cops "look at me, my cop car has fifty flashing strobes of all colors" are even worse. When they have someone pulled over at night its nearly impossible to get around them without being blinded.
