OT This Year's Asparagus Crop

How's everyones' asparagus doing this year? Ours isn't doing well at all. I've only been getting a pound a day and last few years it was producing 3 pounds a day. I've talked with other local people and they say the same thing. We're here in South Central IL 30 miles East of St. Louis Mo.

My planting is one year old, and is exploding out of the ground. Purple asparagus was first, and index-finger-sized. The green variety was next, and one plant had the first shoot come up thumb-thick, and I'm not kiddin'. The stuff is 5' tall. Will let it grow one more year, before I start munching n it.

I love it but have never planted it. One attempt as a kid left me weeding it till I thought I would die. Does that whole salting the earth thing work or is it an old wives tale? If so, when and how much do you apply?

growing very well here ec-wis. was suprised it was growing at all yet, with the lack of warm weather. had thistle problem in the aspargras, pulled them out and would come right back tillering under ground, put salt on bed and eliminated the thistle. we had planted 800 plants, but dont think they are all there. we feed 2 familys and give the rest away.

We've got three 90 foot rows of Jersey Hybrid. The oldest is three years, followed by two years and one. They are all coming up as expected; the one year is pencil thin and will be unpicked, the two year will yield a few pounds of the thickest spears at most, and the three year has given around 6 pounds so far. We lost a few spears very early to some frost. We are outside Pittsburgh eastern suburbs.
Asparagus rocks!

They said they were going to have to bring it in from somewhere else for the Empire Michigan Asparagus Festival. Too cold.

Dave, I have 4 rows that are 35ft long each. I put on 40 pounds of rock salt a year per row. 20 pounds in the spring and 20 pounds in the fall. I fertilize in Late February early March. In the fall I spread the salt then set my tiller shallow and till it in. Same with the salt and fertilizer in the spring if the ground is tillable that time of the year. Yes the salt does work and it's cheaper than herbicides.

It is coming on a little late here in central NY. The smaller spears are really growing, but the big oldest spears, 25yr. are just starting to show and look sparce. It appears that we had some voles take residence in some of the root clumps over the winter. I have always cut the stalks in the late fall and laid them over the rasised beds for winter mulch and reseading purposes. It appears that the voles took advantage of the winter cover also. May have to rethink that practice next fall.

Salt kills the grass and weeds but doesn't hurt the asparagus. Our asparagus here in northwest iowa is growing normally. Jim

planted 1000 roots 3 years ago, so this is the first year of heavy harvest, Of course last fall dry and little snot and only 1.5 inches this spring, it is growing slower than I wanted. 69 pounds so far. Frost night before last and last night again, will no doubt slow it down. Need to bet more salt down to help control weeds and grass.
This is in east central SD

NOT SEEING MUCH OF ANYTHING HERE EXCEPT WHAT WIFE PLANTED FROM SEED LAST SUMMER, aLL THE ESTABLISHED BEDS STILL IN HYBERNATION.

Up here north of Trenton, it's coming on great! We planted 25 last year to supplement the several that were already here. It looks like all the new stuff is doing well. Hope it keeps it up!

My bed is 35 years old, about 12' x 4'wide. This is the best year ever, been cutting every few days and freezing. I fertilize with some 16-16-16 every year after we quit cutting in June.
