Woha!! Someone Needs This!!

There are several types of auxiliary transmissions for the N Fords- there was a discussion about it on the N board awhile back. Seems like there was one that few folks wanted, and I think this was it- because stock Ford transmission is plenty fast for most applications anyhow, and what you really need to do is slow it down- but problem there is, with a step down aux., you also slow down the transmission-driven PTO.

All that being said, it would almost be worth the money just for the novelty of it. Thanks for posting it.

I would really like to have one of these in my Ferguson TO-30... From what I have been told, they will do 20ish mph, and I have to road my tractor 3-8 miles to do jobs, and if I could stuff it in high gear and "let her rip" I think that would be pretty cool!!

I would have bought it in a heart beat, but it is just too far away...

Another way that I could see this being useful would be if you were mowing? In theory, you SHOULD be able to put the tractor in a higher gear than you would like to go, and only run it at HALF throttle, and you would still achieve 540 PTO speed for the mower, but without burning so much fuel?? Sees feasible!! Bryce

(quoted from post at 11:44:42 04/30/14) Just saw this on CL. I personally don't want it, but I KNOW that is a good price on what appear to be something in GREAT condition!! Bryce
Sherman Step UP
The high/low Shermans are the ones you need...you can actually use them when you have a low 1st and reverse. They are around, I just sold one last year on an 8N....and yes, high range is 21 mph or so in 4th gear. Trouble is you have to start out in 2nd or 3rd....not enough power to get them going in 4th.

Probably wouldn"t work for mowing, not much horsepower at 1/2 throttle. Might be ok for some sort of lighter PTO work.

As far as road speeds I have two 8N"s, one has the aux high range the other has the aux hi & lo ranges. The one with the high range will really scoot down the road,(seems a little faster than the one with hi & lo) it has a little slop in the steering like so many 8N"s do and it"s a bit of a thrill ride wide open high fourth gear.

I think you are correct that the Sherman OD was faster than the Sherman Hi/Lo.
My first tractor was a 2N with the OD.
I was clocked running flat out (with my toe on the throttle butterfly) at 23 MPH a couple of times. I used to drive it down to the Am Legion on Thursday nights for cheap tacos and tap beers.
First couple of times I brought a couple of wrenches along and adjusted the toe in a little.
Otherwise the wheels were flapping in the breeze and it was a bit scary.
About the only other use I found for the OD was snowplowing. Run it about half throttle in 1st OD
gave you enough speed and faster working 3 point.
I've read many times here that the Ns were only good for gathering the eggs and going after the mail.
There weren't many tractors that would get you to the mailbox and back as fast as an N could with the OD.
