Finally had the time, OK I made the time, to pick up this planter that was offered to me over a year ago. The guy who had it knew I was working on grandpas old 490 and thought that some parts may work between them. I'm pretty sure I won't be reusing the tires however. Other than those and the seed boxes having some rust issues, it seems to all be in pretty fair shape.

Judging by the pics. it does look to be in good shape. And judging by the paint, it must be a John Deere. I am not familiar with series or model numbers on equipment, never used anything larger than an old Cole planter that Dad bought new which was pulled by a horse. Anyway, you got another project, right?

I restored my brothers old #290 planter a number of years ago. It did a good job of seed placement but even at 36" rows the highest population I could get was about 23,000, so yields were limited. Still a good old simple planter, lots easier to use than the #999 John Deere we used when I was a kid.
