Vanity or what?

Something caught my eye this morning that looked a little odd. Don't the water towers in most towns have the name of the town on the side where you can read it coming in to town?
I was going out of Greenville Michigan headed east and the name was on the side where I could read it going out. I looked back and it wasn't on the other side.
I guess they want to sit there in town and feel all superior or something while telling people coming in,"you don't need to know where you are, just keep moving". LOL

In the old days of aviation, when they flew the mail in open cockpit planes, they made use of the water towers to know where they were at after getting lost in fog or weather.

Around here, the citidiots think they are an eyesore, and want them painted the same color as the sky so you don't notice them. The letters just make them easier to notice. Of course, a nearby bunch wanted a 250' cell tower to be painted instead of that ugly galvanized gray, so the cell tower owner painted it dark brown, to look kind of rusty. That pizzed the locals off, so they next said if the thing was brown, it should have branches, too. So, the cell tower owner put some big Christmas tree branches on it- way up on the top twenty feet or so. Now it really looks terrible- kind of like a top knot on a cannibal. But, I guess ya get what ya asks fer......

I know the town i live near doesn't have their name on the tower. Probably not vanity, they didn't want to buy another color paint ! hahaa

Water towers are a 'flatland' thing. We dont have em here in the mountains. We simply put our water tank up on the hillside above us.My son was fascinated by them as a small boy.He made us stop and see some while we were traveling through the flatlands.

Just kidding, I couldn't resist. Everyone knows the legend of Johnny Appleseed going around the country planting apple trees.
Few know there were other guys going around the country building water towers & painting their names on them. Then when settlers came they decided it would be a good place to build a town, as there was a water system already in place. lol

But seriously folks, Florence Ky got into a big kerfluffel about 15-20 years ago. They put up a new tower near a shopping center & painted "Florence Mall" on it. Local merchants that were not connected with the shopping center complained that a city owned project should not be advertising their competition. Result was they changed the M to Y'. Now it says "Florence Y'all".

They will soon be renting them out as sign areas to corporations to raise money. Coming soon to a water tower near you.

Wal Mart.

I've seen one of the small round ones on a stem painted like a golf ball on a tee, but can't remember where. Think it was west Texas.

My brother got licensed at Ft. Rucker, single engine fixed wing. Flew observation planes in Nam. Aviator joke was, aviators fly by instruments, pilots follow the roads.

Don't know about that. If it's true it's been more than 15-20 years. I've been going down there for 35 years or so and it's been Y'All for as long I've known it.

Town about 30 miles down the road in SC has one painted to look like a PEACH. Ya think they grow a lot of peaches around there?

Luling Texas has one painted like a watermelon. Every summer they have the Watermelon Thump. Big doin's

about half-way up I-44 to St. Louis is the little town of Bourbon..... yep, says so right there.

Tower is in Gaffney, lots of peaches were once grown there, some still are. Spartanburg county, a little ways down the road, was once the Peach Capitol of the World..

For YEARS the water tower in Pawnee Rock, Kansas, had the words "Detroit Lakes" on it. The story I got was the town purchased the water tower used (from Detroit Lakes, MN), and just didn't repaint it.....

Hot and cold water towers in KS must have been in either Pratt or Great Bend. Can't remember which now been a while since I was there.

How about these . . .
