Windows 8.1..............

I was in Office Depot this morning and got to playing around on a display model of a computer running Windows 8.1. It was even logged onto the 'Net.

I didn't think it was all that bad, compared to some comments I've heard about plain 8. I had to look for things a bit once in a while, but the way they change web sites around frequently on the 'Net, that's a daily occurrence, anyway.

Do any of ya'll have any comments? Did I miss something?

They did make many things easier to find in 8.1 compared to 8.0
Still nothing like the older ones were, but I find it to run just
as fast, and it's as stable and reliable as Windows gets.
BTW, I'm typing this on a 6 year old laptop that I upgraded to 8.1

virtually none of your old software will load into windows 8.X.
I don't know what software you are trying to load, but 100% of mine did.
Including games for the grandkids that are 10 years or more old.
Granted, none of mine is high tech software like CAD programs.
I did hear that the older versions of Quicken would not install
unless you installed them in compatibility mode. I don't use Quicken.
I'm sure there are some programs out there that won't work.
I just haven't found any yet.

think you're correct. We've had Win 8 since the beta days. I spend more time with the desktop, but it works very well.

If upgrading and your computer 4 or more years old I suggest getting a new one with the touch screen. It will bring out the best of windows 8.1 it takes a little getting used to but it works great on the right equipment with lots og memory and hardrive. I have a half terribyte hardrive and I think 300 gigabyte of memory. You could use more as programs are getting big and windows 8.1 runs a lot of background programs. Dual procccessor is a must.

I despise it! Cant find nothing like I use to, computer I have now, that is suppose to be faster, is slow as paint drying! I cant get to my folders as easily, and have had problems getting photos to my photobucket account. Wife has it on her Surface and seems to work well, and she loves it. My next new computer will be a Mac.

Nan na Everything I had on 7 loaded slick as heck. Haven,t had any loading problems. Started with 8 but now 8.1 and more satisfied .

Not all computers with 8 are the same. All depends on how it's set-up. As to compatibility with programs? There are plenty of Windows 7 programs that will NOT work with is and some that do. Just had to get my wife a new laptop with Windows 8 and found out that Microsoft Office Suite would not work. It was version 2005. Found out we had to find version 2007 or newer to work on 8. Same problem with our Corelle photo-editing program. Paintshop Pro Photo II worked fine with Winddows 7 but would not work with Windows 8. Had to go and buy Paintshop Pro X5 to work on 8. Also - Windows 7 supports POP email. Windows 8 has NO support for POP email servers. That was a another problem we had to deal with.

I recieved a notice for a Windows update just today, so I did and it forced a restart, and I did. When it restarted,I got a screen pop that said that support for XP expires April 8. I have one that I carry to job sites with me because I have applications that won't run on Windows 7 let alone 8. Well, I have a couple of extra hard drives, so I figure tonight that I will clone a couple of them. If one blows up, I'll replace it from a clone. As far as 8 is concerned, I don't like how they changed 7. I figure that if and when I have to go beyond XP, if I'm going to have to relearn a computer OS, like the difference between XP and 7, I'm going to skip Microsoft completely and go MAC. Heck, I might even go Ubuntu. I've got a drive loaded with it as well.

Hey, just because Allis won't support my old Allis doesn't mean that I scrapped it. I just look for other avenues for support if and when I need it. Microsoft is no different or better as far as I'm concerned.

My laptop is running XP, my netbook and desktop are both windows 7. I think I'm going to look for a windows 7 laptop, as I need to replace it anyway. That way they are all the same.

I could not install my Microsoft Office, My cd burner software and many more.

W/8 is a tablet OS with a flaming flamboyant gui. I think it sucks the wanker.
I skipped over Vista, don't need 8 on any of my jazz. So once 7 support dries up and MS hasn't come to their senses then they can pack sand. That's all there is to it.
