We went and saw this Irish band last night. They're in the middle of a tour of the US. They were here as a part of the Our Front Porch radio show. Gonna be in Alpena tonight and Harbor Springs tomorrow night. Great show, but I'm getting too old to stay up past 10 pm.

It had to be well worth it, you need live music like that every so often, thanks for posting the link, they are great.

While I was attending NYU, on Wed evenings after class, I would go to a place on 14th st and 7th ave, real Irish place, where you could get a $3.00 Guiness (NYC mind you) and a band like that would be playing every week, used to go and have a beer or 2 and enjoy the music, then head home. Always by myself, but the music made me forget that, great little place, to remind one of ones heritage.

Randy,

Three of my granddaughters got deep into Irish dance when they were younger. My oldest granddaughter is now 22 years old and she's still dancing and teaching Irish dance.

I've never figured out how the musicians or the dancers knew when a song was supposed to end. The music just goes on and on and then suddenly, they all stop. My granddaughters were never able to explain to me how to know when the song was over, "They just knew".

Irish music is very similar to Bluegrass, especially Appalachian Bluegrass.

A little bit goes a long way, IMHO.

It sure made for a nice night out in the middle of this miserable winter, that's for sure.
I don't know why I'm such a sucker for a good fiddle. It doesn't matter if it's Bluegrass,Irish,Western Swing or even Classical,it pulls me right in. I wish I had it in me to learn to play myself.

I guess knowing when the song's over is like knowing when to "Whoop". You're supposed to do it when there's a big change in the song or an instrument comes in or goes out,but I haven't quite mastered it.

It is relatively easy to play fiddle on the easier tunes. I started learning to play fiddle at age 64 and of course can't play the really fast stuff or do accurate double stops, but I can play reasonably OK on slower tunes I like.

So go for it. Don't know how old you are but grab a fiddle and try. There are so many learning aids out there. Just look at You Tube and find some. Also get a course with a CD and learn and play along. Mel Bay company sells lots of good courses. I've read that you can learn fiddle if you can sing!! Well I can't sing, but I have learned some basic fiddle playing!!!
