i had a delco remy distributor 1112570 go bad and found a used with the 1112570 matching numbers only difference is three number or letters that follow these seven are not the same will it still be ok

The numbers you are worrying about are the date codes of when each was made. The "1112570" is all that matters.

i replaced a bad distributor on my my ferguson with a used one. finally got points set .had a time getting wires correct think i have them correct. it cranked and runs but when under load like with plow it backfires and will occasionally while cranking. whats best way to set placement , all i know is to gently rotate and find sweet spot but when under load results the same any suggestions on correct timing

Did you check out the used distributor before putting it in?

As in pulling the point plate out, removing the cam and freeing up the weights, looking at the springs to see if they're rusted or broke, checking the bushings, lube everything?

If there is wear in the bushings the points will not stay set, and they may change under different RPM ranges. I hate points anyway, pointless conversions are more forgiving of worn distributor bushings. Hint, hint...

The wiring, I assume you're talking about the plug wires? If it's close enough to run, just pull them one at a time and see if they're right, but if 2 were crossed, I doubt it would run at all. How's your wires, cap and rotor? Sometimes disturbing old wires will finish them off.

As far as timing, I'm guilty as a lot are of just finding the sweet spot. Backfiring is a sign of retarded timing. Using a timing light is a lot safer way.

I wired mine assuming that all distribs rotate clockwise. It ran on two cylinders! Oops. Switched 2 and 3 plug wires to reverse the firing order. Getting away from the points makes a huge difference. The only difference visually is the fact that there are two wires coming from the coil going over to the distrib. One wire is red. I used heat shrink over em anyhow. Check those bushings good!
