My neighbor asked me to help with a Massey 33. Here is the story. It sat for 10 years and he decided to get it running again. The engine was stuck and they bent push rods trying to free it up. Also found 2 valves froze. They replaced the push rods and sent the head to a machine shop to be reconditioned. They replaced 2 valve guides and 1 valve. They have everything assembled and here is the problem. We cant get the clearances on the intake and exhaust valves. All but 1 valve are too tight. The adjusters are bottomed out. They only thing I can think of is when the machine shop cut the valve seats they took out enough metal so now we have lost our clearances. Any suggestions on how to get the clearances? We can shim the rocker arm but I don't really like that. There are little caps on top of each valve. Should we file/machine these to get our clearances?
 
If I understand you correctly the valves stick out of the head too far. If that is true the machine shop did not check his stem height. That also means the rockers arms are "running up hill" so to speak. This is going to probably restrict the flow of oil to the valve stems as well. Did they install seats in the head or just grind the seats? Now those little caps you are talking about are hardened. So forget the file. How much do you use the tractor? There is also a specified clearance between those little caps and the end of the valve stems. A flat washer under each rocker arm support may correct more problems than just being able to adjust the valves. Questions? Post an e-mail or phone number and we can discuss it in more detail. Sounds like the valves and seats have been ground beyond tolerance. Short of pulling the head back off and spending more money, I think I would carefully cut some shims for the rocker posts. It won't need much, probably start with .010". If you have access to a lathe, might want to thin down the heads of the valve cover stud bolts to keep proper gasket crush.

I would not try to grind down the lash caps. They may be case hardened. The surface needs to be mirror polished as the rocker slides across this surface as the valve opens and closes.

Also look at the contact where the rocker touches the lash caps. It must contact on the flat of the cap, not on the edge and try to ride up and over.

You can add more shims to correct this, or make the decision to replace the valves and seats. If the rocker doesn't push on the flat, it will push side ways on the valve stem and cause the valve to break, not good!
