Alternator in generator housing

Has anyone tried the alternator stuffed in the genny housing yet? Will it stand up to the dusty tractor environment? How much should a guy expect to pay for a 12 volt delco replacement?

Pulled up link and realized have 2 of the AC units here. One is on a cir. '72 MTD garden tractor and is used for both starting and charging. The other is sitting on porch waiting for me to put away.

WHAT are you up to... for a "correct" restoration, I can understand paying big bucks for a "stealth" alternator.

For a working tractor, that would be a USELESS investment. WHERE do you fit into this scheme of things?

I'm up to thinking that I might like to pull a cute little 4 row planter with a late A John Deere. The planter requires several amps of continuous power. I'm also up to feeding my OCD "alternator on an old tractor" complex.

Wilamayb, good answer!

How many amps? My Ford jubilee was converted to an altenator when I got it. I just did not like the looks of the alt. So when it quit I sent a generator to rebuilder and had it converted to 12 volts. It puts out several amps and if you don't look at the battery, looks orginal. It did cost more than a rebuilt alt.
Happy New Years joe

"Hemmings Motor News", the Restorers magazine,
has a number of ads for alternators in generator cases.

I know of a Delco 6V , 35 amp generator from a two cylinder starting engine equipped diesel. The 6V generator has run for years with a 12V regulator attached and keeping a heavy 12V load energized. Needs some rpms however.
