can some explain to me about the crew cab and the double cab chevy trucks . Is the double cab like the extended cab but with doors that open from the outside?

jjojj, True full, big cab, 4 big doors Like heavy halfs, 3/4 & 1Ts are Crew Cabs & Mega Cab, Super crew Sometimes called Double cabs. these are the true Crew Cabs in the original meaning.
Extended cabs (GM), Super cabs (Ford), Club Cab (Dodge) are all the Cab&1/2s, whether they are the old original 2 door,3 door or 2 big door/2little door design.
Over the years the cab terminology has gotten convaluded to some degree. Some folks do call the Cab &1/2 design with 4 doors, 2 big 2 smaller even if they open from the outside Cab & 1/2s. or double cabs. I have seen some salesman call extended cabs with 4 outside opening doors,... double cabs.
Hope this helps!

My '11 Silverado sales brochure says that the regular cab comes in 143.5 and157.5" WB for short and long box.

Next up is the Extended Cab where the rear door opens like a suicide door back in the '30's with a 143.5 or 157.5" wheelbase.

The last size offering is theCrew Cab with 4 regular opening doors which is only offered with a short box on a 143.5. Why? "Dunno".

Guessing the CC is on a Tahoe WB and the other two in long box versions would be on the Surburban wheel base of 157.5".

I had the Dodge Extended Cab with the short rear door opening in conventional fashion (Quad door or something like that) and it was a short door like on the GM Extended Cab. To get the big door you had to go to the Crew Cab which had a very large door, probably wider than GM. You can get those dimension off the Ram www I'm sure.

The Silverado opening is wider than my Ram Quad door I think they called it but the seat was pretty well out of the way when up even though you couldn't sit very long on a straight back seat.
The Silverado fixed their seat with a sloping back which is much more comfortable but when up does consume more of the door opening.

The other thing I noticed in shopping the models back then was that the Ram has below the floor storage in the rear seating area. In the Silverado there is no such convenience and the tool box sits out in plain view. I perfer the Ram on that.

On changing badges, no problem with the Rams just that the nearest dealer was Chebby, family owned for 45 years, and all the TLC that goes with that to compete with the big city 25 miles away. Both had reasonable prices.

Want more ask.

I just got an 05 Silverado extended cab (2 half size doors opening suicide style, bench seat is smaller too). It had not dawned on me that there are situations (like parked to close to another vehicle) where you can not get the front door open enough to open the rear door fully.

One of the reasons I bought the Rams previously was the that in
the doors opening in conventional fashion, there would be a solid
post for the front door latch which would/should make the closure
more rigid. (opinion)

I don't think I have ever heard of a double cab on chevy trucks. Just regular cab, extended cab or 4 door cab

I believe now for 2014 in the 1/2 ton models you cannot get the old suicide door extended cab anymore. Now they are making 2 crew cab models, each where the doors all open conventionally. They just have 2 different sizes of rear doors, the full crew cab which has full size rear doors, and smaller crew cab that has smaller narrower rear doors. I'm not sure of the technical name for each design, but I have seen these models on the local dealer lots. I think Dodge may have been doing this for a few years already also. I think this design will go over better than the old "extended cab" with suicide doors.

The Double Cab is their new term they want to use for a 4 normal door cab. The extended cab is two normal doors and the two half doors that swing outward and are hinged on the back of the cab.

For 2014 the new name is a double cab. This was formerly the extended cab in 2013 and older. For 14 the double cab has conventional opening doors with a b pillar. No more suicide door.

The crew cab is still the crew cab. Rear Door openings are bigger than the double cab. Reg cab no change.

I was wrong on both assumptions: The Tahoe WB is 116 and the Suburban is 130. Thought GM would save some money and combine some models with common parts. Oh well. Guess that's one of the reasons they went belly up and the government had to make a car company out of them which they did and did a great job.

My 2011 Silverado is a testimony to that. Contrary to some of you whiners, government isn't all bad. Like today I was driving down US 82, 4 lanes, divided highway, not interstate, all cleared of snow and ice, nice wide shoulders and all, smooth as silk roadway. If it wasn't for the gov., that highway would not be there. Course IKE started the interstate program (but this is a US highway) when he became president after he saw what benefit the Autoban was to us in Germany when he was CIC. So suck it up rednecks. Grin.

I had a '98 with an extended cab but only 2 doors. Real PIA to get anything, folks included into the rear seat. In '05 I essentially bought the same truck, but now they provided outside access to the second seat and called it the Quad Cab. Much Much better although the rear doors were pretty narrow; not too narrow, but for passengers a bit cramped.

Then they came back out with the Crew Cab and it had very large doors; don't know the dimensions.

My Silverado doors are about the same size of one of the Ford 1500 models and width falls between the two Dodge options.

(quoted from post at 13:29:08 12/12/13) The Double Cab is their new term they want to use for a 4 normal door cab. The extended cab is two normal doors and the two half doors that swing outward and are hinged on the back of the cab.

Incorrect.

GM no longer makes a "suicide door" extended cab truck.

Double cab is the new "extended cab" truck. It has four forward-swinging doors.

GM also makes a true crew cab truck, with larger rear doors and more leg room in the rear.
