Welding tractor

I have a Fordson e27n that needs some welding done to it. Can I use a MIG welder on it without damaging the Mag? I know with an alternator I need to disconnect the battery leaads but not sure if I can damage anything on an old beast like the Fordson.
Thanks
Bill

Clamp the ground right close to where you are welding on shiny bare steel, preferably clamping to the part you are welding if possible. Not only will you avoid the grounding path going through something you don't want it to, but you will be more assured the welder will perform it's best from having a good full ground. Jim
