JD 336 Baler Driftshaft/ujoint question

Have a JD 336 that knots well, however I noticed yesterday when i turn even a slight amount there is a pretty significant vibration throughout the baker. This of course only happens with the PTO in gear which leads me to a driveshaft issue because baling straight there are no issues. There are some play in the ujoints. The u joint that goes into the baler is attached to what almost looks like a clutch disk, and there is a significant amount of play and slop in that, I assume that"s be a good place to start.

JD Seller if you can offer your two cents id be very thankful. With how you helped me out with my 720 mo/co, when it comes to John Deere information you seem to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

There were 2 drivelines, the 2 joint and 3 joint on the 336. The 3 joint could turn quite well, the 2 joint vibrates like crazy while turning because the angles on the u-joints don't match.

Which style is yours?

Does the baler have the equal angle hitch on it, if you have the three joint powerline? Or are you just using the two straps?

We had to rebuild the over run clutch on ours. It had the same slop. This is not a cheap fix, the parts are expensive. You will probably have to fix it all the way back to the gearbox.

Since yours is the two shaft PTO make sure the equal angle hitch is set correctly. If you have the draw bar set wrong it will make it chatter.

Also just check the PTO shaft and over running clutch out for worn parts. I have seen bad Ujoints make a shaft wobble and chatter. If the Over running clutch pilot is worn it will let the PTO shaft wobble.

Check and make sure the sliding parts of the shaft are free to slide and well greased. Make sue they are not worn enough that they can "Cam" lock together under load. Then they will slide real hard and chatter.

If this problem just started then Just check everything over. If it has always done it than I would bet that your drawbar is set wrong.

The two shaft PTO works fine as long as you have the baler swung out and the equal angle hitch set correctly. The three shaft PTOs where smoother but they wore out faster too. Once the yokes and ujoints where worn some they where just as noisy as the two shaft PTO.

The 3 joint model is technically the equi-angle version of the driveline. There isn't a way in the 2 joint model to get the hitch pivot point out to half way between the yokes.

We've got a 336 and 348 with the 3 joint. The 336 is an early one and getting pretty worn and rattles due to slop. Our 348 is only at about 100,000 bales and is still nice and tight.

The neighbours NH has the 2 joint driveline, very cheap to maintain or replace but hate using it baling while turning tight and I think the manual even warns against it.

Make sure the shaft slides freely and that the yolks are correctly phased. If someone has broken the shaft tube and rewelded it... it may not be phased correctly. Beyond that... probably the nature of the beast. Mine has a 3 joint shaft and that doesn't vibrate. If you wanted a 3 joint you would need the correct hitch tongue for the baler along with the short shaft section that goes with it. Basically need to find a scrapped baler and get the front off of it... and REBUILD it before you install it. New crosses, etc.
The slop you see in the ORC on the baler is fairly normal. That needs some freedom in it's design so that it can freewheel when you stop the PTO.
