Rant: Dry cell batteries leaking.

Have had several incidents of flashlight and other small equipment batteries leaking recently. Makes an awful mess of the inside.. Both name brands and house brands have done it to me... Most of these items are in daily or at least weekly use. And all of a sudden, they"re dead and corroded.
Years ago, battery manufacturers were claiming leak weren"t gonna happen, and offered a warranty of sorts for the items damaged. Donno if they still do. Usually just discard and try to clean up instrument as best I can. Aluminum cases corrode pretty badly. Right now, I have a very good LED flashlight in an ultrasonic cleaner, trying to cut the corrosion off the inside of the tube. Don"t really want to send it in to the battery manufacturer and get some inferior replacement. DRAT!

I remember the warranty saying they would either repair or replace if the battery ever leaked havent looked for years. guess I will have to look at my batterys I bet the warranty is just about useless though. I have had some battery leakage also in the past couple years too. Heck at 52 I have some leakage too but that just old age comming on.

I've had really good luck with the battery companies reimbursing me for my loses. Sent me new batteries, money for replacement of corroded items to buy in my local stores/prices, and paid for my shipping also. Maybe I was just lucky. chris

Next time look closely at the package to see what country the battery was made in. I haven"t had any leak in quite a while, but I only buy Made in USA.

A late friend of mine sold chemicals and worked with several battery companies. He told me that taking mercury out of the batteries was part of the problem. The trace of mercury they put in the batteries would absorb by-products as the battery discharged. Taking mercury out lets these byproducts leak and swell the batteries.

I just got my Mag Light to work again after the Ravocs went bad. Totally blown off by their warranty dept.
I will never buy anything with their name on it again.

Just checked three brands of battery packaging on my desk. All three had a "satifaction" guarantee. Nothing said about leaking, and damage and replacing damaged items. Think they have dropped that part. Suspect their answer to "satisfaction" is a new set of batteries.

I have also had ray o vac batterys leak I will NEVER buy anything with ray o vac on it ever again or any spectrum brands (the parrent company)

Just last year the Ray O Vacs in my 4 cell mag lite leaked, and I sent them in. They replaced my flash light and batteries with no questions asked. I'm satisfied with their service.

When I have an alkaline battery leak, I clean it up with vinegar (acid) to neutralize the base. Just like you use soda (base) to neutralize battery acid.
