4 tractor accidents to make the news within a month of each other... This is the point where big brother steps in and offers a guiding hand to make sure there are regulations in place to keep us from getting hurt. I really hope everyone is a little more careful around here. I would hate to have to go take a written test and a driving test and get a tractor driving license or something equally stupid...

We just had a death of a 10 year old boy riding in the safety cab of
a loading shovel with his 19 year old brother driving. The shovel
stalled on the crest of a steep hil and run backwards on the wet
grass and then rolled several times. Both lads had head injuries
from banging about in the cab......sadly the young one died.

I was involved with pulling a mortally injured man who was still alive at the time, out from under the hood of an overturned M when I was probably 16 or 17 years old. It made a careful tractor driver out of me for the rest of my life.

My son is on the fire dept and heard a call for a tractor rollover a mile and a half away from his home. It was a close neighbor pinned under the seat of an overturned tractor by the front door of his house. There was no saving him. His widow is having an awful time coping with it. It still bothers my son. There's a big difference in hearing about a rollover happening to a stranger compared to being at the scene of a fatal rollover involving a friend or acquaintance. Jim

I lost a good friend when I was 20 years old from a tractor roll over. Never thought it would have happened to him. He was a smart, cautious person but he got in a hurry once......

Saddest of all is that it was an unfortunate chain of events rather than carelessness. I've never owned a cab tractor or even been in one. But I have wondered about not having the option to 'bail out' in the event of a rollover.

A local guy was mowing with a Farmall H, and rolled it over. He didn't come in for supper, and his wife called for help to look for him. When they found him he was dead, but he'd clawed the ground bare in a circle as far as he could reach.

Sickening. . .

I remember visiting relatives in Beaver County
when I was a kid, none of it that I remember was
suitable for tractors. Of course, that could just
be where we visited.

One of my Dad's friends from P&G, after retiring,
bought a small place near us. One day he was
dragging a log (chained to the seat brace of his
9N) and the log caught on a stump and the tractor
flipped over, killing him.

Unfortunately, it seems we all personally know one
of these stories.

Most tractor cabs are ROPs rated. Thing of it is without a seat belt yer gonna get tossed around in the cab. We had a guy here a few years ago lost the brakes on his 2 1/2 yard loader (guy was known for half a$$ed repairs. He bailed and got run over. Bad part was the loader never went over. My wife's uncle did the repairs and got it ready for auction after they buried the guy. I've known a few guys who have flipped tractors. Most survived but never tried to bail. A couple it happened so fast (witnesses were present) the guy had no chance to bail. I know one guy who did bail successfully. He rolled a combine.

Eric, you are right, Beaver County and here are bad places for tractors. You really have to watch.

When you say "P&G" what do you mean?

Every day I am in danger of rolling over.

I take everything slow, and I do everything I can to stay slow and respect the hills. You can't be a dumb dumb and run a tractor around here. You also can't get too old and forgetful. You can't ever become complacent. You need to stay on top of your game and you need to be respectful of the grade of the land.

The day I get a little off, or too old, or just downright sloppy... That will be the day the man takes me away and all my friends and family remember me and stand over me.

I hate this land around here for this, but, it is what we have done for years. Let's just hope I can survive and let's hope that more people get the message and start to respect the land.

For anyone in the flatland, I pray daily that you get a good yield and are safe. For us out here, we should know by now how t take care of ourselves... I just pray every day...

Recently, there has been too many. Let's pray to end this. "It can't happen to me." has got to stop. Learn first, then just pray it doesn't happen to you.

I hope everyone takes it a bit easier after reading this. It can happen to any of us.
