8N or 9N, maybe a mutt ?

I have what I thought to be an 8N, someone has center punched the serial number into engine casting where the tag would have been. The number indicates it"s a 1949, the block has an 8N-C in the casting just aft of where the starter bolts in. Here is the rub, the instrument panel, steering column & Throttle Quad plate look to be a 9N, also the brake adjuster on the rear wheels is also the 9/2N style. Guess I"m woldering if someone married up two different tractors to make one runner sometime in the past. Any one have an opinion on this?

N series never had serial tags, punched numbers on a small boss is correct. 9n/2n will have large centers both front and rear 8n small centers. 9n/2n have 3 speed transmission, 8n 4 speed.

The N series never had a S/N plate or tag they were all stamped in the block and most likely the original engine wore out and it was replace could have been a new block or an engine from a 8N not really uncommon for a 60 / 70 yr old tractor.

Look on the left side of the engine just below the head. About center. Lay your hand on the front tire and your other one on the starter and a flat spot on the side of the engine should be right in front of your eyes. That is where the serial number will be. The 9N and 2N had 3 forward speeds and the 8N 4. Also the 9N and 2N had the brakes one on each side but the 8N had them both on the right

LKG........would it surprize you to lear ALL N-Engines are interchangeable??? Suprizingly enuff, ONLY 8N's have 4-speed trannys and 9N/2N's have 3-speed trannys. Interestingly enuff, Ford also sold the 4-cyl flathead engine for industrial applications, usually with "arm-strong" starter (hand-crank) and MAGNETO ignition as there were NO BATTERY's fer starter motor or sparkie coils. Many engines were used in oilwell pump applications, portable electrical (110V) generators. Many have "riveted" tags on bell housing specifying specifications. .......historian Dell
