a/c problems

Been working on the air in the windrower. The compressor will only run for a second or two than shut off for 3 or 4 minutes. If I bypass the low pressure switch it will run steady and the lines at the expansion valve get cool. So I assume it is low on freon and add a can. No difference. Add another can with the same results. It is a R12 system converted to R134. I just used the cheap cans from bomgaars with the gauge and when the compressor would run the pressure would fall to zero. If it is leaking it all would it not loose all the vacuum in the system? What am I missing? Its been a long day so I have to be overlooking something.

I worked on a chopper that the symptoms were the same. The door to the heat was stuck covering the evaporator so it would not cool. The cable was broke , make sure you have airflow through the evap and not around it. After that if you can recover the refrigerant to see how much was in there will tell if it has a plugged expansion valve.

Yup, I agree. It would be the only explaination for adding coolant and the low side still going to zero. Don't know the system type you have but if it is newer it might have an orifice tube, in place of an expansion valve, that may be plugged. Same issue.

On there best day, those silly 'squeeze trigger' fillers are kind of a joke.

Sounds to me like it is still low on freon.

I agree with the stopped up exp valve/cap tube theory, however I would add. The stoppage may be ice,esp if the system was opened or had freon added before problem started. You might also been low on freon at the onset then introduced air while charging. Did you purge the hose before adding the freon?
