Gunnison, Colorado's Pioneer Museum

The museum is located on the South side of US-50 on the East edge of town. The many buildings are accessed in a walking tour or by golf car (first come, first served). There are extensive collections of vintage farm items, classic cars and items of everyday life from the 19th & early 20th centuries - a veritable 'window into the past'. Well worth a tour if you are in or close to this gem in one of Colorado's most historic high country ranching communities:

We have been there MANY times.Always a treat! The car
museum(Mallett collection) was donated by a
gentleman right here in Delta(Co).My wife's maternal
greatgrandmother was teacher at the
'Paragon'school. The museum is a MUST SEE!

Heck, I LIVED in 'Gunnyvile' and had never bothered to 'see what's behind the train' until a couple of months ago. By the way, it is a 'must see', as you said!

mj........the first time I went to Gunny, came over Monarch Pass from college in Pueblo. Had mobile amateur radio transmitter with 500V generator and was trying for DX (distance award) on top of the pass. Ended up down in the valley by some "hot-spring" fed river fly fishing. Slept on the COLD hard ground. 20-yo body didn't care, eh?

2nd time, drove thru the Black Canyon past the Curecanti Needle. Dad had an enhanced photo of the canyon with the Empire State building being swallowed up in the depths of the canyon.

Used to be the television station engineer at KREY-TV in Montrose.

Last time, had my 13-yo son and stayed someplace downtown with old fashioned "tin" ceiling in room. ........Durango Dell

Early 80's we went from Illinois to Phoenix to Durango and Silverton and stayed in Gunnison one night in the middle of September. It was some kind of hunting season and the motel was full of boozed up hunters partying all night. I don't remember what the temperature was but I couldn't believe how cold it was in the morning. Had my Corvette and had to hold the choke open to keep it running.
Colorado is some nice country, we've been there five times and I like driving around in the mountains.

Take the narrow guage rail from Durango to Silverton and see the old stage tracks along it. A lot of UFO stuff going on in that area. Have been all over Colorado in our younger days. First mountain I ever drove up was Mt Evans in the early 60's. I will take the west any old day!!

(quoted from post at 10:09:05 07/10/13) Do you still live there? My wifes family 'Cranor' is
there.

Nope ...... been living N of Montrose for the past 35 years but I still have friends over there so I make the trip every now and again - Cranor ...... as in 'Cranor Hill' I'm guessing. Never met a Cranor but the name is very familiar ...... probably one of the pioneer families?

My mother is a Gunnison. I believe John W. Gunnison, for whom the town and region is named after, is one of her ancestors.
