Bakelite Connector

So I just got my mag back from the shop and bolted it on the Hercules motor (on a silver king). After about 2 dozen cranks it came to life. For about 5 seconds. Then boom. It died. Turns out the bakelite connector between the mag and the motor broke into 3 pieces. So my questions: 1. where can I get a new one? 2. What did I do wrong when I put the mag back on? 3. Is this a designed failure point that protects something more "critical" to the engine? 4. Can it be made out of something other than bakelite (like aluminum or steel)?

Thanks.
