does this make SenSE??,.. cnn yuppi tv suggest that everyone should shut off all power tonite at the same time to supposedly save power ,,,??i know very little about power surges ,but i know enuf to know this may be traumatizing to the power plants , the yen and yanhg stress ,will probably be tremendous ,hopefully the power houses will anticipate this theatrics and will be ready to coast thru it

Why would you do this?

I do not believe the amount of people on YTMAG will create a disturbance, we are pretty well spread apart.

I predict an insignificant number of people would do it! If it really happened it could cause a hiccup, maybe a bad one. Think of all the street lites, refrigeration in large retailers, etc that are not going to be shut off. You and are a small part of the picture.

i wouldnt do it, the reason is even if you could get a significant amount of people to do it and it did save a couple of bucks worth of electricity, the problem is going be when all these do gooders turn everything back on at the same time, that will cause a massive hiccup in the power grid causing numerous power company crews to be called out on the weekend to fix it which in the long run will be way more expensive than any power saved in the first place. that the side that nobody thinks of

yep i got educated on this years ago when the company got a new rock crusher and wanted the power company to hook it to the power as they had a substation 1/4 mile from the pit, they came out and looked the rig over, adding up the electric motora on all the conveyors the 3 crusher cones and the primary jaw, and totaled it then they told the boss not only no, but he double toothpicks no! the draw woul;d brown out 100 square miles of nm,every time we fired the rig up, the alternative was used, 2, 500 hp diesel engines turning generators to power the crusher

It won't work and nobody will do it, except perhaps a few people who get led around by whatever feels right at the moment.
If I wanted to live in a society where everything was dictated to me by somebody else, I'd move to Cuba or North Korea.

Hummm...... @8:30? If I may be sitting here reading by the light of one naked bulb. Or, I may already be in bed. I doubt anyone will notice.

So far today there is NO wind. There's a bunch of windmills in sight from here and they're not turning a lick. So, if it stays calm that would balance it out if everyone turns off their lights-- maybe the power company will do it for us?

Most of my lights will be off by then which will be normal. TV and my reading lamp will be on. The fridge light will come on a couple of times.

Hmmmmm, sunset isn't until 8pm tonight due to daylight savings time. So I'm only supposed to have the lights on for half an hour then turn them back off? Yea right. I'll turn'em off at 10 when I go to bed. Stupid whiney lefties!

I can"t remember where I read about this. The problem isn"t with everything shutting off at once, but starting everything back up later. Getting all the generation equipment back up that was idled while the lights were all off will burn a lot more fuel than what was saved by shutting the lights all off.

I'm gonna go against the mainstream and purposely leave a bunch of lights on all night tonight! Lol, what a joke that is, as someone below said might as well move to Korea!

Our annual Barbershop Chorus show is tonight, and I don't think we'll be singing in the dark in honor of the treehugger project. I will be doing my part, however- I'm the emcee, and will be using a little battery powered LED light to read my notes, because its so &#$@ dark at the podium when they turn the house lights down.

There is probably more impact every week night at the combined 11:15pm ET & 10:15pm CT time when local news weather forcasts are finished. Millions of people shut their TV's off and start getting ready for bed.

I'll get right on that. Thank goodness I got gas for my generator, it will be running.

I do believe in conservation....I am an active consevationinst, not and conservation activist.

An interesting article on why it really does not help reduce C O emissions much.

I've been doing my part for the past couple of weeks since my yardlight quit working and I haven't fixed it .

A few summers back Dad and I were in the middle of a big project that had me doing alot of heavy MIG welding all day. I could always tell when people started getting home from work because I'd have to turn up the welder a bit to make up for the extra power draw from eveyone turning down theor A?C when they got home. I experienced that every day for several weeks during that job, and from then on would also notice it (now that I was looking for it) anytime I started to weld something late in the day.
