Our local news just did a feature on the bitter cold we're having here in mid Mich, single digit temps to zero. The report was how the MDOT Hwy dept puts down salt but it will not work below 20 degrees. They report that the hwy dept. adds a "special" thing called "Calcium Chloride" to the salt to help it melt ice. The reporter goes on to say how no one has CaCl around home so you should just use hot water! Yah right! What an idiot! Dump some water on the sidewalk in zero temps and see how far that gets yah. Talk about a recipe for a busted rear! None of them are smart enough to report that most or all pelleted ice melters sold in stores is calciul chloride! Great research and reporting. So, whatever you do, if you see an icy walk, help out by dumping some hot water on it!
