OT appliance repair

Had to do a little emergency appliance repair this morning. The wife never cleans the lint screen in the dryer often enough. Pulled it out this AM and the lint was so thick that it peeled off and dropped back down into the passage. Had to remove the back and dismantle to get the "clog" out of it. Oh well, didn't have much to do anyway.

I have always heard that not keeping the lint out is a good way to have a dryer fire and that in turn burns your house down.

And that should include popping the bottom cover, and getting the lint outta the bottom of the machine.
Went to my utility room one time, smelled something burning, and discovered I had had a fire in the bottom of the gas fired dryer. Why it burned itself out I don't know - got lucky I guess!

Check out your dryer NOW!

I always pull the screen while the dryer is on..any loose lint will come out as I pull the screen...another thing...those darn dryer sheets have a tendency to coat the screen..they will slow down the air flow and it will cause premature failure of the electric heating elements..recommended to wash the screen under hot water..sometimes the water will not even go through the screen at first.......

You would be astonished at the stuff I've removed from the dryers at our rental houses. You'd think folks would wonder where all that stuff went.

Should have sent away for that Lint Lizzard for $19.95 when you had the chance shouldn't you?

(quoted from post at 10:24:20 01/13/13) as a volunteer fireman I can't count the number of times we have had dryer fires over the years.

Amen to that, There are a lot of people that figure they will let the fire Dept. do it. One time though I was heading back to town from the end where the call was when the tone went off. I was first on scene with the Chief of Police right behind me. We worked pretty fast to pull the dryer out and get some water on the wall before nit had a chance to get really going.

Had an Uncle lose the entire home from dryer lint fire. Had only finished with a major interior remodel 11 months earlier. I do my dryer interior, and ductwork 2xs a year just because my runs a little longer then recommended. Easy inside house maintence work for a cold day.

On another theme, when my wife was getting dinner ready for some company yesterday evening, she called me and said there was something wrong with the garbage disposal. It wasn't draining. It ran fine and sounded normal, just wasn't draining. The other side of the sink drained fine.

With company arriving, the whole thing got put off until this morning. Pulled it apart and found the drain plugged with potato peels. Told my wife that's why you're not supposed to put potato peels in a garbage disposal, they're too flexible and gummy to cut up properly.

She said she knew that, but with company coming, she got into a hurry.

Anyway, I just love to tear the drain under the kitchen sink apart on a Sunday morning.

Had to do the same thing here a few weeks ago, she checked it while running and the lint was sucked in. I got this dryer from a friend of ours that was updating to newer appliances, and have used it for almost two years. While apart in the lint housing was 11 22 LR bullets and a few 17HR bullets(a little biggger than the 22LR), so was happy I took it apart and then installed stove pipe for six feet instead of the old crappy flexible stuff the landlord had supposedly just replaced.

I take the whole pipe from the dryer to the outside apart about once a year and clean it. Takes about 1/2 hour and it's very cheap peace of mind.
