354 Perkins Turbo dsl. in an F250

I once saw a Perkins in a 79 F250 so it got me thinking. I have a 64 Ford F250 with no engine and would like to do something different with it. I know it would be no big power house. I'd like to gear it for about 65-70mph. I found an engine out of a 760 Massey combine and have a machinist friend that can make an adapter plate. I would like to put in a manual od trans and use it for light pulling and a knock a round farm pickup. Anybody did something similar?

easiest way to get the speed up would be to change the crown/pinion in the diff... could do it with bigger tires i suppose too... depending on the truck diff ratio it might be ok already... best guess would be 3.54 gears or so... a 4.10 rear end would be slow... had an old truck with a 4.71 rear end, screamed it's head of for 50mph... got a neighbour doing the same thing with a 96 f250...

I had a neighbor that had a 354 in a 75 Ford. I am pretty sure he ran a 20% over drive Brownie box. Got upwards to 30 MPH, and could pull about whatever.

Years ago before diesel pickups were available I saw a late 60's Chevy with a 354 Perkins. At the time the sound of a diesel pickup turned people's heads. My 79 Dodge 3/4 ton has 4:10 finals and non-overdrive 4 speed. It's spinning a little over 3000 RPM at 65MPH.Jim

I've always been interested in putting a diesel in a half ton pu. Looking for a 4bt cummings. I think it would be a fun project. If the motor came out of a tractor or combine I think you have to do some work on the injector pump or it will be too touchy on the throttle, can't remeber exactly what maybe just in the linkage.

Yup,Anythings possible.Over the years I have seen numerous repowers.Perkins;Detroits;JohnDeere...My personal favorite was a '53 Ford with a 5 cyl Mercedes.Go for it!

I have ran across ,,a Cat 3208 in a 1 ton chevy dually 5 spd with 2 spd rear end . A 4-53 detroit it a 65 chevy pick up , rear head turner .
A perkins diesel in a 76 dodge van . Anything is possible if you have time and $

Doug, Jim Lacey had a 75 one ton Dodge that he put a 453 Detroit and a 4 and 3spd. brownie behind it. It would pull anything and sure let you know it was comming.

The one thing I will tell you is if you do this you need to get the pump reset to be used in a truck. There are diffrent specks sets for a 354 ag engine and the same 354 engine in a truck. Same engine but about all the changes are in the injector pump. Bandit

It can be done... I saw a 250 done up once with a 4 cylinder perkins... probably about 80 hp. They called it the 'Sassy Massey'. It was anything but sassy on the highway. Might have made 55 mph for want of power.
With a 354 turbo it should be fine. Turn it up a bit and it'll have lots of power. 3.73 rear end will fix the speed issue provided it's got an overdrive transmission.

I would realy like to know how he is going to get around the trucks computer system to use the 354 in it. I have a tired 95 F350 I would like to do this to but cant find anyone who can figuar out how to make it run without the computer. Let us know how it works out. Bandit

The 4.236 Perkins was standard in a Dodge van for the UK market, you did not want to be going anywhere fast!, there was a 6 cylinder option as well, think it might have been the Perkins 6.372.

Bandit,

For your 95, the biggest problem is that all of the gauges are electronic and run off the computer, so I suspect there is no way to do it. On my 96, the throttle was electronic also (powerstroke). Speedo came from a sensor in the diff, etc.

Need to find an older ford with mechanical throttle and a cable from the tranny to the speedo, I would guess. The OP is using a 64 Ford F250 so that will work fine.

That is a real easy one. Tons of delivery vans running that motor with manual tns. Just watch the truck salvage yards. IF you are lucky you can find one that is TURBO and INNERCOOLED. If you get there in time they can cut the motor mounts. I got the entire works including the radiator for $ 2500.00 . Going in a ih scout.

5 speed with an overdrive and leave the rear diff alone.
There are four speed overdrive transmissions with a lockup torque converter to consider as well.

A way to do it would be find an older ford diesel one with the idi engines I had a 94 with a 7.3l idi factory turbo truck that everything gauge wise was electric put mechanical throttle and the only issue is if it's a auto which is electrically controlled but it probably could be done
