I changed my first seals today I have always had somebody else do it. It was not hard at all and I saved a lot of money only cost me $15 in seals .i was paying from 60 to 150 depending on the size but not anymore.

I rebuilt the steering cylinder on my friends IH 1066 saved him a fortune it's not hard until you get one of those big 4 in job that require special equipment just take them apart.

I have one apart as of tonight. Cylinders are like brakes - people think they are hard so they feel like its ok to pay a bunch. It's criminal what they charge to do these things!

Just be glad that one went together so easy. I've done quite a few over the years that would all but make you lose your religion trying to get them together without cutting the new seals when installing the rod into the barrel.

Hi Got one of my customers always asks if i can do a cylinder before the dealership. Done 6 or 7 for him and the hole lot didn't cost what one did with the red boys in town . Last one was not fun but 1 bad outta the lot was good odds.
As said easy if you can figure how they come apart and not wreck stuff putting together, we had one kit was $150 so not a cheap screw up if it went south.

Did you put grease or vaseline on the seals before you put the cylinder back together? If not, they can be damaged and/or leak.

I repair alot of rock drill hammers for one customer. The kits for them cost around $500 and would fit in about 1/2 of a small ziplock bag. Three of the seals have to be stretched over the piston before you can install them down in their respective grooves in the bore. Then you've got to get everything together, and the piston stuck down in the bore before the seals shrink and get cut when you slide it in. Thing is you can't tell any one of the three is cut until you run the machine. I've been lucky and only had that happen once before. That time I drove to the mountains, rebuild the hammer, couldn't test the machine where it was setting, and there was no crew around to move it where it could be tested. I wound up going back the next day...... From that point on I never build a hammer and left the job without it being tested first, regardless of where it was sitting.

Thankfully they did start carrying those particular seals as individuals, for a decent price, otherwise you were looking at a $500 screwup for damaging one little seal. Not too good............

Yes I put Hydratex (spelling) grease all over it which that kind of grease is good and slippery if you have not tried any you need to.
