farmall power

i have a 49 m not a super m ive fixed my throttle put a hotter coil on put hotter plugs in and did a little to my govener is there anything else i could thats simple to gain more power without taking the head off

Ms were made from '39 to '52.Supers were '53-54.So of coarse your '49 is a "plain"M.Open the fuel/load screw a turn or so.How much more power do you want??

id like to get about 5 more horsepower i dont want to turn my rmps up to high and ive got my fuel up as much as i can before it floods out

Hot ignition systems are for the average engine a lie. If gapped at specs, if spark jumps at 12,000 volts spark jumps at 12,000 volts. So what if the coil can make 45,000 volts. That spark is going to jump when the coil builds 12,000 volts. The way to make that resistance higher is to raise the compression so that it requires more voltage to spark or increase the plug gap. You are talking about a low HP engine to start with. So an increase of 10% isn't much....what 2 1/2 hp or less? You have to put it in perspective....a 10% increase for a 200 HP engine is 20 HP. That's a big jump. A 10 % increase on a 23-24 hp engine isn't much. Making the gap wider isn"t really going to help that engine unless you really improve flow oth in and out!

Oldtanker is right about the hot coil, it is a myth that you will get more performance. I would put in fire crater pistons, or turbocharge, if you really want more power.

well the whole reason for me doing this is to keep in in antique pulls im going up against olivers diesels and a john deere 70 thats pushing alot of power and id like to keep everything looking stock now is there a hotter plug i could get or anything like that i was told to get an 806 carb or get mine jetted im going to get head work done this winter and then ill finally be able to tell what pistons are in it a guy i pull with says it sounds like it has high compression pistons in it but i dont know yet

Quit screwing with it and tear it down an rebuildit to YOUR specs.Be forwarned,to produce the kind of HP your looking for will take LOTS of bucks!

Advance the timing. Better know what you are doing or you will be changing pistons with holes in them. Dave

The way to make more HP is to...

1. Raise the compression.
That can be done one of several ways.

a. improve the air flow with bigger valves, improved intake porting and polishing ect and or a turbo. Both expensive and I don't know if you can really improve the intake manifold. Also a bigger cam shaft opening the valves wider and longer allowing more air in and exhaust out.

b. high compression pistons

You can get some HP by the adjusting the timing but you have to be careful and will only be able to tell how much with a dyno. That's about the only cheap way to do it.

Careful with your carb adjustments too. If it's blowing black smoke, even a little it's costing HP

ok thanks i just have one more pull i wanted to see what i could do for it and this winter im doing a tear down of the head and maybe the block depending on whats already been done. do you know of anywhere i could look into getting m&w pistons and cam ive found pistons on ebay but they are really scared and knicked so they are pretty much junk
