High, high hours on a mower....

Dealer got a kick out of one of my Toro walk behinds we're still using as a semi-every day runner/back up. Dad bought it in '88, been through multiple, multiple hourmeters. It used to average 500-600 hours a year, now down to 200-300. Probably has 9-10,000 hours on a Kawasaki 12.5hp single that has NEVER been apart and i think has the original carb on it. Pretty funny. Can imagine how much fuel has been through that thing? There's a couple others around here that have 6,000-10,000 also. Not all good luck around here, couple Kohler twins have shucked engine parts around 800 hours, grrrrrr..... But couple other Kohler EFI twins have 3000-4000 though!!

That sounds about like the troy built tiller I have. My dad got it in 1972 and ya it has had its share of parts put on it over the years but I still use it every year to till my garden. My dad would till about 1-2 acres a year with it me I use it on an area maybe 100 by 50 or so if even that large some machines just do not know how to die

Oliverguy,
I think you will find that Kohler makes at least 2 kinds of engines. I have a 20 hp v-twin command. It has hydraulic lifters and an industrial design, oil pressure switch, oil filters. Only have 1400 hours on it, 8 years old. No issues yet.

A friend has the cheaper Kohler on a sears mower. The engine threw a rod with less than 400 hours.

Please ask your service guy if all Kohlers are made the same. I think there are quality Kohlers and cheap one for the Sears box store market. Post back and let me know.

They're all on commercial toro's. They've had a few problems over the years. No problems with the air cooled and liquid cooled kawasaki's I have. They all have a pretty hard life.

15 years ago i bought a husky riding mower from TSC with a 13 hp tecumseh engine. it too has led a hard life for its size, however it is still going strong and still does not use oil. only had to clean the carb a few times and changed plugs once and one new deck belt.
