I was working away on my computer, and all at once it shut off, then came back on.

I then got a pinkish popup that showed 38 infected items. When you clicked "Remove", a screen came up wanting to charge $89.00 for software to remove the infected items. I declined, and the computer quit working altogether. Even non Internet links like MS Word would not come up. All the shortcut icons were there, just when you clicked on one, a message came up in the lower right that the program was blocked. Same thing on my Malware link.

My wife"s computer continued to work OK. I went down to my shop and got this computer I had down there to do work orders, etc. without being on the Internet. (I misappropriated it when the insurance company I was working for went kaput).

This is the one I"m on now. Works great, except I can"t get my Yahoo email to work. Something about security.

Has anyone else had this happen? I suppose I"ll have to take the other computer to a geek somewhere and get it straightened out.

Update. The message I get when I try to access my email is that the computer's security certificate has expired.

Well, ya never know what those computer freaks can do to yer computer! They probably got their feelings hurt when you spurned their help. They do things like that, then ask for money to fix your box!

Serious Malware attack. A bootable disk/program will take it out, but you will need the malware software. Jim

Some malware will disable the GUI startup of system restore and it won't run from tghe Windoze GUI system. You can boot into command prompt and run rstrui at the prompt - that is the command to manually start system restore.

Have you tried starting the computer in the safe mode with networking? If your icons work in the safe mode you can download Malwarebytes Antimalware and clean the computer

You have been infiltrated, read about this a couple of weeks ago,,, only too willing to offer a solution at a cost after causing the problem.

What version of what OS is on this computer? You may try system restore in safe mode on Windows XP. . Should be something simliar on Vista and 7.Other wise you have two choices. Take it to a computer tech and pay them to take the virus off, or, if your able to , save what you can, buy the correct Windows disc , create a new partition and reload Windows, you still gotta be careful with the saved programs as the virus could be attached to them.

Any chance you can remember who wanted the $89. That person needs to be reported to spam at gov dot com. They are most likely china.

I Would re-install Windows from the beginning! Wipes out everything, & buy a better Anti-Virus program like "Trend Micro Titanium". The Radio show host Kim Komando says "If You arent sure just dont click on it". This is one of the newer scams, & if You had given them money they would certainly come back for more!!! She also has said they will remove part of it after You pay them, & then tell You in order to get rid of the rest of it; then it will be double, or tripple the money to finish the job!

Should add you may be about to get into add or remove programs while in safe mode and uninstall it from there. It's unlikely to work in regular mode because a program can't normally uninstall while it's running(which it surely will be). You may not be able to find it at all but sometimes it is there.

Are you trying to access Yahoo email from Outlook or going directly to www.yahoo.com? I would never use Outlook for reading email unless you really know how to lock down the system against malware attacks.

And don't even think about giving the attacker the money, they'll take your credit card and have all kinds of fun with it.

Farmerboy,
That is also what I would do.
Some of those viruses or whatever they are will not let you use restore.
So start the computer and when it's up and running pull the plug from the outlet on the wall to kill it.
When you start it back up it will ask if you want to start Windows normally or safe mode.
Choose safe mode (use the arrow key and enter key to select)
When it's back up and running do a system restore.
If you don't know how to do a system restore just ask. It is very easy to do.

Another option is if the computer is off, press the F8 keyboard button and keep it down while you start the computer. This puts you in safe mode, or gives you the option to go to safe mode. Press Start then Run. At Run, type in mrt then press enter. This is Microsoft"s malicious removal tool. Let it do a full scan at the options page. It will take a while to complete if you can get it to run. Then run a full virus scan if you have one installed. Then download AnimalWare Malbytes and run it. I"ve had several pop-up boxes like this appear, never click on em, just shut your computer down immediately and it should go away.

The safer way to do that is press F8 upon startup. It's unlikley that pulling the plug would do anything bad, but it's already in rough shape with the virus, it don't need more 'stress'.

My thought. Once they get your credit card number, the software might not even be forthcoming.
