dirty fuel?

about a week ago my diesel tank was almost empty so I tipped it up and pumped out almost the last 20 gallons, thru a filter. I know some of the tank sludge got past the tank filter since I could see it getting dark, so I stopped. My 4010 diesel is now stalling out under load. I bought new fuel filters yesterday and will put them in tonight. I've never replaced them in 10 years since I've owned the tractor. What are the odds it's just the filters, or could it be the fuel pump is going out or tired too?

I'd say you found your problem as those are classic symptoms. You loose your top end first.

If it just happened since you put in that known (??) dirty fuel, I'd hope it is just the filters.... My tractor was starving from almost 1 hour to the next and the junk had clogged the line between the tank and filters. Took it loose and blew air back thru and all is well. Gotta take the tank off/clean it when it's empty tho....

Perhaps its just dirt but I would be worried about a rusted and corroded tank. I think if you get the tank empty you should thoroughly inspect the inside.

Thanks, just to expand alittle more, I think I only put in about 10 gallons (two 5 gal buckets) and I saw the smokey colored fuel at the end of the pour. Keep in mind it went thru the tank filter first. Tractor starts and runs, then starves out after about 5 minutes. It was run maybe 40 minutes tops yesterday since that fuel went in.

Got told a long time ago not to do that. I also don't use fuel from a tank for a few hours after it's been filled.

We do fuel quality control testing in western, pa and what you describe sure sounds familiar. I often encounter similar complaints only to find heavy bacterial contamination. Even though it is filtered the dark fuel is contaminated and won't burn right. Imagine several thousand bacterial colonies feeding on the fuel and dropping their byproduct in the fuel.
