OT check out the curve on this one!

Was asked (or told) to put an oak face on this radius for a reception desk. Found, on line, an oak veneered product that would bend like this. No one local had it with an oak face applied. SO, had to get the 'curve board', apply that, then laminate a veneer oak on it. Then, it needed the baseboard applied, so cut it in 2" pieces and glued them on around the curve. Now I get to make the 2 counter tops for it as well! Oh well, it keeps me out of trouble!

On that baseboard, why didn't you saw the back side almost all the way through every inch or so to bend it instead of cutting it all in pieces?

You can bend that base board by steaming it. Hold it over a boiling kettle til its soft. I've heard that you can use a clothes steamer to, but I would think that would be slow.

Might have been able to get 1/4" drywall to bend around the curve. Might use 2 layers to get flexibility and strength. I believe my son said he had to drywall a similar application and then mud and finish it. I would guess veneer would also be available.

Since my carpentry skills are limited to fence building, I am always impressed when you post a project. Just curious if you come back and sand the baseboard to blend the joints some.

Show us the finished product when it is wrapped up.

I knew I could steam the 1/4" piece at the top, but the base is 1/2" x 4", did not have the time to experiment (carpet is coming Tuesday). I figured they should be cut the same, or it would look odd! The trim boards are sanded already, I am counting on the painters to do a bangup job with the filler!

Are they really going to paint over all that nice grain, or are you just calling anybody who does the finish work a "painter"?

Still interested in the finished product,

Kirk

The painters are supposed to be staining it today, so they can put their clear finish on before carpet on Tuesday! I did not get any materials for this till 1pm Friday-hence the 'no time to experiment' comment!
