One of our cows had twin heifers yesterday morning about an hour apart. She"s a black angus bred with a very good angus bull. Thing is last year the same cow had twin heifer calves also from a different bull and her mother who my neighbor still has had twin bull calves last month. I only have a couple cows another due to calf any day but seems odd to get twins two years in a row. She took care of last years calves fine, couldn"t tell them apart and they did well at the sale barn. These are doing great too but it"s odd twins two years in a row but then again I"m just a little hobby farmer not really a cattle man.

Interesting thing with twins - maybe you already know this - if it were a heifer and a bull, there'd be a 90% chance the heifer would be sterile. Two of the same is fine though.

Thats good to know because I've been told twins of any match typically don't breed well. One reason last years went to the sale barn.

Congrats - yes that is unsual. Hope she is a good mother with plenty of milk for both. One of our's threw twin bulls last year and this year she is way off schedule. I think she has about a month to go yet.

Nope- a heifer twin to a bull is known as a "freemartin". About 15% of those heifers will breed. A vet check, even at a young age, can determine possibilities.

I would be tempeted to keep both calves to see if they had twins.

Twins both of the same will be fine.

Twins of a bull/ hefier combo will suffer. The bull while not sterial will suffer from reduced fertility and the heifer will be totaly sterial 90% of the time.
It is caused because they share the placental connecting the calves with the cow. This allows the blood from one calf to mix with the other calf. They affect each other in a way that causes each to develop with some characteristics of the other. Both have male and female characteristics.

Just went out to feed corn to the mama, one calf nursing the other became my best friend being scratched and rubbed under her chin. One thing about the cows 3rd time calfing here they are gentle and not afraid of us. Gave calves shots and mama came up to see what"s up but nothing but a little grumble. Grand kids hand feed the 2 fat cows grass through the fence. Nice they are gentle.it"s fun having them around, not profitable but it's nice to look out back and see cows

Well I've learned a few things thanks guys. John in la that would be interesting to see if they had twins. If it would rain and we had hay and corn to winter a few cows I might find out.central Illinois and we're getting hit like everyone else hot and dry

It"s the testosterone from the bull calf that influences regression of the female traits and development.

its happened to one my cows before. well one yr a cow had twin heffers. both were full grown the next yr i believe it was and the same cow that had those twins had another set of twins and the exact same day the second set of twins was born which again were both heffers 1 of the original twins had a calf but it was born dead and i believe it was a bull. ive had lots of cows have twins in the last 6 or yrs. most the time its bull and heffer. its pretty rare both are heffers and i think ive only had 1 or 2 sets both being bulls. just had a 2 sets of twins bull and heffer a couple days apart about a month ago. one set i took to the salebarn they went to cheap and i kept the seocond set to raise.
