Melroe Spray Coupe 116 (same as 220)

Hi guys - after finally finding a way to kill glyphos res waterhemp...I have new troubles! My coupe seems to have come down with a severe power problem - Its starts right up - even throttle - cold at 2500rpms - warms to 3000rpms...pretty normal there - but seems like it has no power. Empty tank its better - full tank on a field I can't seem to drive it above 1st gear - which is really too slow - I usually..up until yesterday spray at 2nd gear. If I try that - it will die - go up a little hill - even with momentum and it will stall...

then it seemed to get better - but the tank was also emptying - when you load up 600 in chem - I find it best to do whatever needs to be done to get it on weeds..

Things Ive done: checked all fluids, oiled the governer - pump braket did come loose - fixed that - power problems w pump on and off - found leak in hose near pump...fixed that...problem persists...pushed sprayer w hands - seems to move freely - no apparent binding anywhere.

Anyhow - any advice?

Yea - that is what my instincts tell me "fuel" - gonna run out for a fuel filter today - but I would think that would cause hard start - and it starts on one or two cranks - even cold...but then again - if fuel is in bowl - which it could be with a blocked filter - then no load would be fine...Its gonna be a pain to test....

Probably not the problem, but might be worth checking: owned a 220 for a lot of years; it was used between Feb and Jul and sat outside 365 days a year. It would never run exactly right when I first used it each year until I took the carburetor apart and cleaned it out; it always had a little water in it and I never found how where it was coming from, unless it was from condensation (HIGH humidity in the Mid-South). After the first time or two, it was only a 15-20 minute job.

I usually don't leave mine out but due to spray job cut short by flat then storms...I did...and I've worked allot of carb problems with other machines...but..usually they are all consistent - I can get 4th gear on the road...great speed with partially empty tank...even did ok with full tank after several hours of struggling in field...and rpms are great in first gear under full load...

What are your thoughts????still fuel??? any other marcro symptom possibilities?

Carb's fool me all the time

im loosing my mind, but the spray coups do look neat anybody thought of taking the basic body of a old worn out one and using it to make a street rod? wouldnt meet that coming down the road at ya

Not to detract from my post - but everytime I see mine - I think I need to put wings, tail and propeller on the front and fly it!

might work lol where is that kit james bond had on that old amc lol cant remember the name of it now

A plugged fuel filter would cause this and not effect starting. If it is a gas engine there is enough gas in the bowl to start it. Change the fuel filter and check and see if there is any sediment/water traps in the system. They could also be full of dirt/water.

We always had carb problems. I"d check filters and then get the carb done. My main gripe was rear end heavy. I set it on its butt and filled my pants at the same time. I don"t miss those days.

Well - found allot of potential problems...the fuel pump 12v connector (+) connector was hanging by a thread and could have easily bumped to ground where it was hanging...fixed that connection, I changed the filter and cleaned the sediment bowl, changed the air filter, also had a locust thorn punch a hose from the sprayer pump and it was spraying a fine mist on to the distributor when the pump was running - whole engine was sticky....I ran over one small locust tree (strattled it) last time I sprayed and I guess that thing stuck me...cleaned that all up...

Its raining pretty good right now - I guess I"ll fill up the 200 gallon tank and try to run up some hills - its never really had much trouble empty...(with power)...

I have a Melroe 220 with the VW engine. A spring on the carb broke and lets it runs full throtle all the time. I can not find any kits, or part to fix short of buying a complete replacement carb that is $1844. Any suggestions and input on where to get help or just the spring part would great.
