Tractor Data says a JD 4020 produces 83 hp at the draw bar and 95 at the pto. Seems to me that should handle a pretty big mower.

The fuel adjustment screw should have a seal on it. The screw can be turned in. I take mine to a shop, but bet someone here has done it.

IF your JD 4020 has a Roosa Master injection pump then it is harder to turn up. You have to remove the governor spring shaft and then line the retain clip screw up with the hole in the pump head. Then you can only turn it up IF the pump has been apart and the service people took the factory shims out of it. The factory pumps had the retaining clip screw set to the correct fuel delivery and then shims installed under it so it could not be turned up externally.

I would not turn it up much or you will cause trouble else where. Switch to a higher horse power tractor rather than tear up your JD 4020.

If your 4020 is doggy mowing hay, I would be changing fuel filters and air filter (or clean the oil bath air cleaner, depending on the year of the 4020) and checking injection timing first. To turn up the fuel flow you need to get inside the pump like JDseller says. A 1/8 turn will really wake up a 4020, keep a close eye on your temp gauge if you turn it up.

DAng, what kind of mower are you pulling? I pull a 12' Hesston Hydra-swing with a 4010 and have all the power in the world I need. Now, I don't have big hills either, just gently rolling terrain. Try sharpening your mower knives or sections. I know, I didn't answer your question. But, you kinda asked for it....since we're all a bunch of old farts that just HAVE to give our opinion.

he he, lol... maybe I'll pitch in and recommend he trade for a smaller mower...

Mark and David below. THERE IS not any "fuel" screw on a JD 4020 of any age or model. They all would have had a Roosa Master injection pump on them. NON of them would have had an external fuel adjustment. The big in line Bosch pump does but that model pump was never used on a JD 4020.

Guys make sure of the advice you give a fellow. I have seen guys ruin their Roosa Master pump by breaking the pump head mounting/retaining bolts. These bolts sticks right up on the outside. The guy turns the "H" out of it and when he does not get any more power he turns it some more. Then it breaks and the head comes loose with a broken bolt in the fuel head. Injection pump repair time.

4020 at best (as Originally delivered) is an underperforming machine.Non-turbo-ed pooch. I have had 2 and though they are comfortable and operator friendly, they lacked real break-out power that other Models possessed. Our 4020 from new on started hard, blue smoked and shook while warming up and just gave us the impression it just was not ready to go to work. The early ones we had engine durability issues. We blew 2 up (DADS and the neighbors) on a silage blower before we went to superior machines.
Guys on here will defend them to their death. (This is after they have tampered with the injector pumps -added turbos and put oversize pistons etc.)Or better yet do the right thing Scrap the original and put a Cummins engine in.

I mow with an 8 ft disc mower with a 2510 gas, but that's all it needs. I would think a 4020 would have plenty of power for a big mower.

Put less fertilizer on. You will be able to power right through, LOL. Or, get a Ford 7600. The screw on those old Simms is very easy to get at.

It's plain to see you don't know what you're talking about or you would sign in with a NAME. Guest I have one question for you: if 4020's are as bad as you think they are how come they'll bring more money than any brand for their age & hp????????????

You'll never get a post count if you don't register. FYI there are lot of members that have a lot more post than I. I'm not trying for a record number of posts just correct information when I post which obliviously you have no desire for your post to be correct. Another thing I'm retired & disabled and drawing a check off your Social Security payments that is """if you're old enough to pay in and also have a paying JOB""" which I seriously doubt you have.
