Do any of ya'll know what would be a good bait to put in a live trap for groundhogs in an area where there is plenty of grass and other foliage?

Ground hogs about 20 miles away and coming this way, but no personal experience yet. Maybe apples, pecans(shelled) strawberries, banannas?

Granny used to sit at her kitchen window with her 22///They poked their head out it was the last daylight they ever saw!

celery, cantalope rinds, watermelon rinds, marshmallows with anise or vanilla on them, I have even caught them with tuna

Do you give them crackers with the peanut butter?
I have one or two that live in my old wooden garage out back. they dig under the folding door, and make a mess. I hate to shoot them when i see them going inside the shed, as i have equipment in it. What to do?

I think carrots may have visual and olfactory qualities to attract them and smear the peanut butter on there. I"ve trapped a lot of critters but no groundhogs recently. Good Luck. Apples may work too.

I have had good results with broccoli, lettuce, strawberries and apples, usually in season we have at least one of those coming in and some that are not nice enough to eat but make good bait.

Don't know what works, but I know dog food will only result in catching your neighbors cat. He was not thrilled with the experience either. My personal favorite is 1-1/4 oz. of #4's. Works every time.

I have been trapping ground hogs for several years. I now bait my traps with Cheetos crackers , cheap canned salmon catfood and this week started using marshmellows. I switch back and forth with these.
In the last week I have trapped 3 young foxes, 2 groundhogs , 4 possums and 2 coons.

I am proud of you folks.... noone mentioned flybait and coke......

Does anyone still eat groundhogs and coon?... When I was a kid, it was like having chickens or other producing animals to have a pair of groundhogs close by. Knock out the young when they were about rabbit size and enjoy. Only a couple never did a lot of damage.... I'd go with the conibear I believe, otherwise, you're just gonna end up making them someone else's problem or end up torturing (lack of better words) them....

Practice, practice, parctice.....that way you don't miss.....!

I use the rind of cantelope with some of the fruit left on. Works every time.
Critters relatives come back every spring however. Guess they don"t learn much.

I used cantaloupe and caught two in about two hours. I squeezed some juice out on the trap so it smelled strong. Then put some in the trap. Worked slick!

Marshmellows make good bait to lure them into a trap, but flybait and coke makes the trap unnecessary.

Thanks for all the responses. I might try apples or cantaloup first. Don't want anything that will attract our cats.

Stupid things are digging under my shop, and whenever I see one, it's totally unexpected.

Have been catching coon, possum, wood chucks, skunks and sometimes cats all on peanut butter. Let us know what ending up working.

I second that, conibears I set around the garden, this year have gotten 3 g-hogs, a squirrel, and a possum, with 4 or 5 in the pouch.

Make sure they are down in the hole and put the exhaust from a stinky diesel down the hole. I had woodchucks under my garage and did this. He didn't come back out. Best part, no one moved back in. Seems to have stunk up the ground pretty good.
