Polorize Generator

(quoted from post at 21:01:26 04/12/12) Dad always said, any two that generate a spark.
would not follow 'dad's advice' on that one! BAtt to Field on the A-type generator & the field contacts are burned to a crisp with the full 200amp of the battery trying to force it through little field contacts. Can you say instant welded contacts or metal vaporization?

The only way I remember to never touch the F terminal, is you will will using a word that starts with that letter once you touch it. chris

To Polarize the Generatior, momentarily flash jump from BAT terminal on the VR over to its GEN/ARM terminal and you should get a small spark. If the GEN/ARM is hidden underneath like on some 4 terminal VR's, jump from BAT direct down to the Gennys ARM post.

Its better if you dont do it messing with wire.Generator gets polarized every time the cutout relay closes. One wrong connection will smoke the regulator.

When a cutout closes, the voltages are nearly the same on both sides of the contact points thus very little arcing . When you close them manually, you have no voltage on the generator side thus a heavy arc when they close and this damages the points even if they do not stick together like they some times do. Reverse current opens them with the bucking winding but if they stick it may not be able to do this. Not a recommended practice.
