alt not charging

I just hooked up a new alternator, the ammeter is on 0,and the battery is not charging.I must have a wire in the wrong place.

What alternator and how did you wire it. One simple way to check if it is charging is the magnet trick. Take a screw driver etc that is not magnetic and hold it to the back side of the alternator. If you feel it pulled toward the alternator like a magnet would then the alternator is in fact charging

What kinda tractor is it, 6 volt or 12 volt system? Are u talking about the ammeter gauge or a multimeter with ammeter capabilities?

delco 1 or 3 wire alt with internal vreg?

older alt with external vreg?

can we assume 12v neg grnd?

if 1 wire, are you revving it up high enough to excite it? some need as high as 1800 rpm.

if 3 wire, have you hooked #2 to charge stud, and #1 to switched side of key thru an idiot lamp?

post back some details.

thanks for the response,I know I didn"t give enough info. Delco alterntor,3 wire exteral regulator.Grey from #1 on regulator I know to be field,so I connected that to(F) blade terminal on alternator.#3 terminal on regulator(lt blue) I connected to(s) terminal(second of 2 blade plug). Both are 14 ga wires. The 10 gage wire from hot terminal to ammeter. The lt blue is the one I am guessing at.Its hard because the schematic I have shows all these wires ending up at a circle representing the alternator, but not exactly showing where they connect.Thank you to everyone who responded.I hope that"s enough .

That only means that the rotor is energised. The stator windings may be open or shorted to ground or the diodes may be bad, so it still won't be charging.
