Saw the beef post below and it reminded me. I just took two #300 plus hogs to the butcher to get process and smoked. Not looking forward to that bill. Having hams, bacons, picnic hams, and half the chops smoked and the rest into 4 types of sausage. I may need to sell some as freezer space will be an issue. What would be a fair price to ask? Don't need to make money but don't want to lose out either.

We have found that total costs including purchasing, raising and butchering came to nearly $3 per pound for the pigs we raised last year, but it may be different for you. I don't know that there is a great savings for us but the fact that the pigs were raised by us and fed things that we thought were suitable does make a difference to me. Everything is going up all of the time, and when we started out raising pigs in 2003 it was a lot cheaper.

Aldi foods around here has butt portion hams for 1.39 a pound. I do know you can't sell yours for that. Shank portions for 1.19 a pound. I had a buddy give me half of a 250 pounder and it cost me more just to process than that.

I sell mine 1.5$ per lb live weight and customer pays processing. It cost me about 1$ per lb to raise plus processing. But I feed non Gmo grains and no steroids or antibiotics mine is almost organic. At the farmers market I get 4$ per lb by the cut.

Just curious,is there a hormone that labeled for use in hogs? I know that "no hormone" claim is a load of crap when it comes to poultry since there are none approved for use in them.

I would say up to $3 per pound would not be out of line with current grocery store prices, depending upon the cut of meat in question.

i believe there is..I just cant put the name together right now...something lean i think. Some say it makes the pigs crazy. Ive been out of the business too long to remember...

Paylean? Not exactly a hormone, but it has a strange effect on some hogs, especially when it comes to how some animals handle/take stress.

PG-600 is an injectable hormone given to adjust sow/gilt cycling. I think Lutallyse (sp.?) is a hormone approved for hogs, too. There's others, I'm sure. None get used here.

Nothing wrong with making money.I see that pork has doubled in price in a year.3 bucks would be fair.I havent raised pigs for a long time because the total cost was too high.I keep a few hens because I like having them around.I can buy large eggs for 1.20 a dozen.Layer pellets cost over 30 bucks a hundred now.

The last batch of freezer pigs (Feb 2012) we sold were $1.30/lb hanging weight. The customer pays for all processing. We also sell whole hog sausage for $3/lb and make quite a bit more profit than selling halves.

I just looked up an invoice for a family memeber that we paid for the processing and delivered to them. It came out to $2.35/lb hanging weight with hams and bacon cured & smoked.
