03 FORD 250

open forum time--i had a code on my ford 250/5.4/gas/86,000 mi. he said #4 is missing.
he then tells i shouldnt drive it,it could melt the piston. that seems odd to me. i have been driving 2 weeks like that,i estimate. i dont get his reasoning. any input?

Except for running rough and having less power, I don't see where it would hurt the engine. I have had several coil packs go out over the years in Ford products and they have never caused any damage problem.

Is what may eventually happen by not burning the fuel you will wash the oil from the cylinder wall and scuff the piston and cylinder wall. If you are going to keep driving and not fix it unplug #4 injector. You may have damage already, only time will tell or a leak down test.

Mine did this last winter in down-town Cincinnati Oh. IT was no 5. coil boot. I wanted it fixed now, it wouldn't pull the trailer and tractor but in 2nd. The guy that fixed it said that the car wash caused it to go bad. Said when you blow 2500 psi water at the boots will fill the holes with water and while it is boiling the water out causes the boots to get hard and crack. I had had my truck cleaned up before the trip and they had asked how good I wanted it cleaned up and I had said. Like you are going to sell it. Why would you want to drive it missing? Vic

It's not going to hurt the engine. If anything is going to be damaged it would be the catalytic converter from having raw unburned fuel getting in it. The PCM will disable that injector when a dead miss is detected and will periodically re enable the injector to see if the cyl will fire. High probability the coil is bad. If you change your plugs, USE A TORQUE WRENCH to tighten with NOTHING on the plug threads.

i only plan to drive it until friday, when i have an appt. to fix it. i usually wouldnt even worry about it. but these new motors are just so cheaply made.

any which way you look at it, going to need to be fixed, might as well get it done to keep from finding out what/any damage it could cause, regardless what being said,, at that mileage, just do a complete tune-up, cheaper now that a tear down later..should run hopefully for many more miles with out trouble...my opinion

yes,bob you are right. its my only wheels.
that many miles?? oh,the rest of the story..put in a jasper reman last summer at 82,000. thats why i can make the statement about these newer motors.

Running the way you describe is what will damage the catalytic converter the most, especially if the check engine light flashes on and off. A flashing check engine light indicates a catalyst damaging misfire is present. Converters are not cheap...

he cleared the code and it didnt come back on.
the original code did not flash. a guy just left here, said he had turbo problem with his dodge(flashing code) they told him when they flash,do not drive it. btw--cant i just eliminate the converter? why would i replace it?
back in the day we just cut some holes in the bottom of them.

I just bought a 08 ford s crew a year ago. I love the truck but i here this kind of stuff. BrianJasper, are these fords any good? Im not trying to start a war. But i read about the camphazers and the IWE"S and the cops, injectors taking out the cats. The blend doors in the heaters. Why, with todays technology cant they work better than what i read about?

y 03 F250 was missing on #2 and#4 a while back reset the codes added injector cleaner ,within two days no more miss, could just be a paptly clogged injector , by the way my 03 only had 378,000 Km on it..

Illegal to take them off. You won't find an exhaust shop that will touch your exhaust system if you do other than to install new converters. The PCM also monitors catalyst efficiency and no converters or non functional converters will set catalyst low efficiency codes and check engine light on.
